Recently, 38-year-old Paru gave birth to not one but two beautiful calves. Elephant twins!

Beating the Odds

The park hadn’t seen such a rare occurrence since 1980. Furthermore, research suggests that there is a less than a 1% chance that female elephants will give birth to twins. If they do, it is extremely likely that one of the babies will pass away shortly after birth.

Thankfully, despite these statistics, the calves are doing remarkably well. Paru and her 40 member family have all stepped in to help care for these miracles.

We think that the two were dealt a pretty good hand; they get to grow up in the wild but safe from poachers and under the protection of the park rangers.

“This is a very unique scenario in terms of conservation, particularly in the elephant population,” Kenneth Ole Nashu, a senior park warden, told On Demand News. “We are really proud, and we are now monitoring [to ensure] that the babies are in quite good health.”
