Soon after Tate moved in with her new family, the next door neighbor also adopted a puppy, named Vernon. The tall backyard fence did nothing to stop Tate and Vernon from falling in puppy love. Hailee would often come outside and catch the two digging a tunnel to each other. “We couldn’t get them to stop. We couldn’t keep them apart. They would just keep digging holes to each other,” Hailee told The Dodo. Given the undeniable connection, the neighbors knew they had to do something. So they made a custom doggie door in the fence!

The family constructed a custom-built doggie-door in the fence, allowing Tate and Vernon to visit each other whenever they’d like. As you can imagine, since the doggie-door has been built, Tate and Vernon have been inseparable. “They love being together! I don’t know if they are actually in love, but I like to think so,” Hailee shared with The Dodo.

It might not be feasible for everyone to have a doggie-door connected with their neighbor, but Hailee hopes Tate and Vernon’s sweet story helps other dog lovers create a more welcoming environment in their yard. “I hope that it encourages people to be more friendly with their neighbors, and encourage a sense of community. It has worked out well for us so far,” Hailee told The Dodo.

Messy is a yellow Labrador with a passion for friendship. 

Messy lives with his mother, Oranit Kittragul, in Thailand. While she benefits from the love of her dog, Messy’s caring and affectionate ways go much further. Another dog ends up having a better life – all thanks to Messy!

Across the street from Messy and Oranit’s home is Audi, a lovable Husky. Audi’s owner has work during the day, and leaves him alone in the yard. Like many dogs, Audi gets anxious when left alone. 

Thanks to Messy, this anxiety can be relieved through the company of a friend. 

“When he feels lonely and cries, I always ask my dog to see and talk to him,” Oranit told The Dodo. “My dog just looks from my fence and sometime he barks to [Audi]. I don’t know what they are communicating, but he stops crying.”

Messy brings comfort to Audi, and Audi wanted to show his appreciation. When Audi’s owner forgot to close the gate to his yard on his way to work, Audi made a move! Audi escaped her yard and headed to Oranit’s fence. Messy was right at the gate to greet Audi.

“He ran to my dog and they hugged each other,” Oranit said, taking a photo of the moment.

The dogs hugged, and Audi had to go home soon after. Despite the space between Audi and Messy, their friendship could never be stronger. 

Now that Oranit realized the love and friendship shared between dogs, she organized play dates for the two. Now they can get together and enjoy their friendship.
