Allergies are never fun, especially for dog owners…

If you are thinking about adopting a Chihuahua and you or someone in your household suffers from pet allergies, don’t worry we’re going to answer the itching question “are chihuahuas hypoallergenic dogs?” once and for all.

Keep reading to find if Chihuahuas (long-haired or short-haired) are considered hypoallergenic dog breeds.

You may also be surprised to learn what really causes pet allergies and what steps you can take to minimize your allergic reaction regardless of the dog breed you choose.

Let’s jump in…

What makes a dog hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic is just a fancy way of saying a dog causes fewer allergic reactions than other breeds. How much a dog will shed is a determining factor in how hypoallergenic a dog really is. That’s why it’s very difficult to find a dog that is 100% hypoallergenic.

What causes dog allergies in humans?

The real culprit is pet dander and not the hair or fur. There is a protein that’s found in the saliva, dander, and urine of dogs. The two proteins are called Can f I and Can f II. The proteins stick to the dead, dried flakes of your dog’s skin (dander).

Pet dander causes an allergic reaction called allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, in humans. It affects about 40 to 60 million Americans and 600 million people worldwide. It’s a type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when our immune system overreacts to allergens in the air.

Dog allergy symptoms:

Sneezing or a runny or stuffy nose.

Facial pain (from nasal congestion)

Coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and wheezing.

Watery, red or itchy eyes.

Skin rash or hives.

Hypoallergenic dog breeds recommended by breeders mean they shed very little. Because they don’t shed as much as other breeds, there’s less chance for the allergy-causing dander to get released into the air, on your furniture and floors.

So that leads us to the big question, how much do Chihuahuas shed?

How much do Chihuahuas shed?

The fact is, ALL dog breeds shed. The Chihuahua is considered a “medium” level shedder. How much they shed depends on their coat. Is it smoothe, long-haired, short-haired? You can also minimize shedding by grooming (more on this later)…

Most dogs shed seasonally. Dogs typically shed their winter coats in the spring to give way to their light summer coats. When fall arrives, they shed again to make room for their winter coats.

Chihuahuas shed all year long but the heaviest in the springtime. That’s why they are considered “medium” level shedders.

Are long-haired chihuahuas hypoallergenic?

Long-haired Chihuahuas have more hair and require more grooming. Regardless of the dog you choose, you will need to frequently groom your dog to prevent the spread of dander. And if you are allergic to the protein in dog dander, raising a long-haired chihuahua (or any long-haired dog) may not be the best choice for you.

Are smooth-coated or short-haired chihuahuas hypoallergenic?

Smooth-coated (also known as short-haired) chihuahuas will be easier to groom and maintain the dog’s dander. Their fur is shorter and easier to manage. Both breeds are identical except for their coats.

If you love chihuahuas and are mildly prone to dog allergies, go with the short-haired chihuahuas.

Dog Allergies, Grooming and The Root of The Problem

As previously mentioned, the root of the problem is dog dander. More specifically the protein found in dog dander is what causes our human immune system to overreact. The easiest way to minimize this problem is to frequently groom your dog.

The skin is the largest organ on a dog’s body, so it’s important to keep it clean and healthy. Brushing your dog regularly helps spread the natural oils in the skin, removes dead skin, dander and any hair that is about to shed away. This is very important to do often, especially during the shedding months in the fall and springtime.

Here are some tips to make this a pleasant experience for both you and your dog:

Give your dog a bath at least once a month. You can use anti-dander pet shampoos if you must.

Before you bathe your dog, try using the highly-effective Furminator for Dogs. This tool effectively reduces shedding by up to 95% and professionals use it.

Make sure you groom your dog outside away from your inside furniture.

Vacuum often to remove any excess dog hair and dander.

Feed your dog a nutrient-dense diet that helps maintain healthy skin, coat, and essential oils.

Consider changing your central A/C filters when needed and install filters made for pet dander. You may also consider an air purifier for your home.

In conclusion

So there we have it. While Chihuahuas are not considered Hypoallergenic Dogs, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy and love these little cute dogs that originate from Mexico.

Remember, there’s no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog breed. The root of the problem is dog dander. Regular grooming and bathing of dogs may reduce allergens but not completely eliminate them. But since Chihuahuas are a smaller dog breed, they shed less than a larger dog breed would. And that may make them the perfect hypoallergenic dog for you.

Regardless of the dog breed that you choose to love in your life, frequent grooming, baths, and hygienic home practices will keep the dander at a minimum so you and your furry canine companion can live and in a happy and healthy home.

One of the many questions you may ask is: “what is the recommended space between a dog’s collar and his neck?”

When picking out a collar for your dog there are a wide variety of styles and materials to choose from along with several factors that you may consider based on your needs – reflective strips best for nighttime walking, chain slip collars for training purposes, or harnesses for an alternative to traditional collars and breeds with neck sensitivity. Regardless of what collar you choose, the one thing that they all share in common is the need to ensure that they fit your dog correctly.

Why Does Collar Space Matter?

A Dog Collar Is So Much More Than Just An Accessory For Your Four-Legged Friend. Your Dog’s Safety Ultimately Depends On A Well-Fitted Collar. Many people may just grab a collar, that appears to look like the right size, and put it on their dog. This is a huge mistake. A collar that is too loose or too tight can easily affect the wellbeing of your dog.

If a collar is too loose, then you may not be able to control your dog safely and effectively. While walking your dog, if they become spooked by a noise, they could back out of their collar easily and potentially put themselves in danger. It is simultaneously frustrating and frightening if your dog escapes the yard or house and when you finally catch them by the collar, they back right out of it. Another loose collar concern is that it increases the chances of them getting caught on tree limbs, fence corners, or bushes.

On the flip side, if a collar is too tight, it could lead to irritation on the dog’s neck along with difficulty breathing and limited neck mobility, which ultimately leads to pain internally and externally.

How Tight Should A Dog Collar Be Then? First Consider Your Dog Breed.

The general rule of thumb is that you should be able to comfortably fit two fingers in the space between the collar and their neck.

How To Measure Your Dog’s Neck

Obtaining an accurate measurement of your dog’s neck is the first step to finding a collar with the proper fit. For best control, the collar should sit slightly above the bottom of your dog’s neck. This is going to be the area you want to measure.

The easiest way to measure is to use a soft tape measure. If you don’t happen to have a soft tape measure, you can also use a string or ribbon and then measure that on a traditional tape measure. The key is to get something that is similar in flexibility to that of a collar.

You’ll want to add an inch or two to the measurement, which ensures that the collar fits comfortably and is secure.

The collar should feel snug but not tight. In order to ensure you purchase the correct size collar for your dog, measure the circumference of their neck either with a string or soft measuring tape (this measuring tape is perfect and cheap too) and add approximately one to three inches depending on your dog’s size.

Wider collars are generally preferred for bigger dogs that pull on a leash versus a more narrow collar alternative that is generally preferred for smaller breeds.

Purchasing The Correct Sized Collar

Collars are sold based on their size: XS, S, M, L, XL etc. These sizes are roughly correlated to the size of the dog that they would best fit. The collars will also specify the length ranges that the collar will fit. That’s why it’s really important to measure the neck circumference before purchasing your dog’s collar.

While the length specifications are a huge help when finding the correct sized collar, it is also very important to consider the width of the collar. A wider collar can help with dogs that are strong and tend to pull a lot. A collar that is more narrow can be useful for smaller breeds, or dogs that may have shorter necks.

As a starting point, if you are not able to measure the circumference on your dog’s neck, a popular pet store recommends the following sizes based on weight and breed:

XX Small (Up to 5lbs) is recommended for Chihuahuas and similar small breeds.

X Small (5-10lbs) is recommended for a miniature Dachshund, Pomeranian and similar sized dogs.

Small (10-25lbs) is recommended for Pekingese, Miniature Schnauzer and other similar sized dogs.

Medium (25-55lbs) is recommended for Beagle, Border Collie, Bulldog and other similar sized dogs.

Large (55 lbs-75lbs) is recommended for Boxer, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever and similar sized dogs.

X-Large (75+lbs) is recommended for Great Dane, Mastiff, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard and similar sized dogs.

It is important to note that this is just a general guideline on how to get started on choosing a collar size for what works for a large majority of dogs of this breed and size and there may be some dogs that wear other sizes despite the breed guideline.

Potential Sizing Issues

Typical collar sizing is based on the fit for an average dog. Collars don’t fit every dog the same way, so it is important to consider your dogs anatomy.

According to Dr. Michael Walsh, of Oak Hill Animal Clinic, “Some dog breeds will slip out of any collar if their neck is thick and the same width as their skull. Breeds such as Greyhounds, Whippets, Pugs, Bulldogs and similar breeds will slip out of even the tightest buckle collars.” In cases like this, where any collar may slip, you may want to consider looking into a harness for added safety and control while on walks.

The Importance Of Testing And Adjusting

There is a really simple rule out there when it comes to the appropriate fit of a collar. You want to be able to fit two fingers comfortably between your dog’s neck and the collar. While it is simple, it’s also very accurate. This test ensures that the collar is not too loose, or too tight.

Another quick test you can do is gently pull the fastened collar towards the top of your dog’s head. You want to ensure that it does not easily slide over, and off, your dog’s head.

Adjusting the collar is imperative to ensure your dog’s constant comfort. If you have a puppy, it is important to check the fit, and adjust accordingly, often. However, it is also vital to check the fit of your dog’s collar even once they’ve hit adulthood. Grooming is one thing that quickly throws off the fit of the collar. It is important to check the fit right after the grooming, and also after a few weeks have passed.

Accounting for minor changes in anatomy is also important when it comes to adjusting. While most dog’s weight stays consistent, there could be fluctuations throughout their life. Checking every so often ensures that you account for changes in their weight or even excess skin that may appear as they age.

Check, Readjust And Rest

All collars are made differently, so it is important to check the space of every collar your dog wears and to continue to check the space even after a prolonged period of time, as well as any visible wear and tear on the collar.

It is important to note that a collar’s fitting should be checked and adjusted after any shaving or grooming has been done around the neck. If your dog’s fur is growing back from around the neck you may have to readjust it again.

It is not recommended that you leave your dog’s collar on indefinitely and some recommend for the safety of your dog that their collar not be left on when they are in a crate or home alone, however at the very least it is important to take your dog’s collar off occasionally to give their neck, skin and fur a chance to rest. However, when putting your dog’s collar on again, it’s important to re-check to ensure it is still fitting correctly.

What Happens If The Collar Is Too Loose?

This may seem preferable over the alternative of a collar being too tight, but it can be just as problematic. A collar plays a huge role in the control of your dog. If a collar is too loose, your dog could slip out of it on a walk. Alternatively, if you’re needing to hold your dog back, for any reason, you certainly don’t want to lose that control due to the collar sliding off. If your dog happens to escape, a loose collar can also hinder rescue efforts.

What Happens If The Collar Is Too Tight?

A tight collar may seem to resolve the concern of lack of control, but there is such a thing as too tight. The issues with a collar that is too tight revolve around the negative effects it can have on your dog’s wellbeing. A collar that is too tight can cause extreme discomfort for your dog. In the most extreme cases, it can become embedded, which can result in major medical issues. It is extremely important to ensure that the collar does not hinder your dog’s everyday activities like eating, drinking, and barking.

What About Dog Harness vs Collar? Which is better?

Harnesses are a great alternative to collars recommended by Bark Post because they allow more control, eliminate any potential neck pulling thus causing injury, and are especially good for breeds like pugs that have a greater sensitivity to putting pressure on their neck or have respiratory issues.

According to the American Kennel Club, harnesses are especially beneficial for puppies who have not learned to walk on a lead because it helps eliminate the possibility of them being caught in a leash and becoming injured. Harnesses allow owners to reduce the amount of pulling from the dog, which is an especially important leash behavior to teach when they are a puppy.

In addition to avoiding potential neck injuries and instilling positive leash behaviors at the puppy stage, harnesses do provide additional peace of mind to owners that plan to walk their dog in public. Harnesses prevent dogs from having the ability to slip out of their collar and put themselves in danger.

In the end, the safety and well being of your dog is a top priority and ensuring that you choose something that is the right fit for you and your dog and as always, consult your vet with any concerns.

Dog fireworks anxiety is a common occurrence for dogs all across the country on the Fourth of July.

It doesn’t matter if your dog has anxiety or not, loud thunderous booms from fireworks are enough to frighten any dog. But your dog does not need to suffer.

So you may be asking, “what can I give my dog for fireworks anxiety“?

There are many effective ways to help calm a dog who is terrified of fireworks, thunder, and other traumatic events.

In this article, I want to share with you what has worked to calm down my dogs when the loud noises from fireworks start. Let’s begin!

Dogs and Fireworks – How To Help Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

Fireworks happen twice a year. The worst day for dogs is on the 4th of July, followed by New Years.

July 5th is the busiest day for dog shelters. Knowing these two days gives you the advantage to PLAN AHEAD!

To help you, here are some tips to help keep your dog calm during fireworks:

Before The Fireworks Start

The very first thing you should decide on is whether or not you will be home during the fireworks.

If you plan to go see fireworks without your dog, please consider a Dog Sitter.

You don’t want to leave your dog home alone during fireworks, especially if you know your dog already has fireworks anxiety and is prone to separation anxiety.

Whether you stay with your dog (preferred) or have someone you trust to watch him, the following tips still apply.

At the start of the day here is what you need to do before the fireworks start lighting up the night sky:

1. Exercise Your Dog Early In The Day

Exercise is so important for you and your dog. Take your dog for a nice LONG run or walk. When you exercise early in the day, your dog will feel like taking a nap later.

Ideally, you want to exercise your dog a few hours before the fireworks start OR right before you plan to leave the house. This way you know your dog will want to cuddle up in his safe space and just chill with his favorite toy and or blanket.

2. Stock Up On Dog Calming Treats or Chew Toys

I’ve had great success with CBD oil calming treats. CBD takes some time to work but once it “kicks in” my dogs generally like to take a nap.

If you combine calming treats and exercise, your dog is going to be one chill pup when the night begins.

Pick up a supply of your dog’s favorite chew toys or bones. This will help distract your dog from the loud noises and keep him entertained for hours to come. If your dog is a really quick eater, make sure that chew toy will last at least 2 or 3 hours.

Keep Your Dog Safe Inside

It’s a fact, more dogs go missing on July 4th than any other time of the year. If you do plan to bring your dog out with you early in the day to have some barbeque fun, just make sure you keep a close eye on him and he has proper ID tags!

But to keep following along with this guide, here is what you should do after you’ve taken your dog out for a nice long walk and stocked up on essential calming treats and toys…

3. Create A Calming Environment In Your Home For Your Dog

One of my favorite ways to create a “zen room” is with essential oils.

Get yourself a good essential oil diffuser (there are so many to choose from here) and some lavender essential oil.

Lavender works great to calm down my dogs plus it smells amazing!

Close the blinds.

Keep your blinds and windows closed. The noise from fireworks is bad enough to scare your dog.

Keep the blinds closed so the bright lights don’t make the situation even worse.

4. Create A Safe Space Or Den

One of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your dogs safe during 4th of July is to create a safe space or an “escape area” — this is somewhere your dog can go to and feel comfortable in his area.

Before the fireworks begin, you should already know what room or area your dog already loves, feels comfortable and safe in.

Not only does this help your dog cope with the anxiety from fireworks, but it also ensures that your dog won’t be outside at risk for being lost and disoriented.

Because you took your dog on a nice LONG walk or run earlier in the day, he is already tired and ready to calm down.

You don’t need to worry or feel guilty that he didn’t get a chance to go outside and enjoy the summer weather and you get to enjoy your holiday too.

Here are some ideas for you to create a safe space for your dog:

Blankets – my dogs love blankets and burrowing in them. Dogs with anxiety really like blankets too. It gives them a sense of comfort and security. So make sure your dog’s favorite blanket is in his safe space.

Make sure your dog has his favorite chew toy or bone to chew on while all the noise of the fireworks is happening.

Calming treats – if you’ve given your dog a good dose of calming treats, he should be a lot calmer during the fireworks. But always have some on hand to reward him when he is feeling some anxiety.

Keep the room cool/cold – I like to keep the A/C on colder than usual because it helps my dogs relax and cuddle in their favorite blankets.

If you can create a nested area in the room that is like an extra room within a room, this can also give them a better sense of shelter. A blanket is the easiest way to do that but you can also build a crate and place the blanket over the kennel if your dog is used to that.

5. Play Calming Music For Your Dog

Many dogs love music. You can play some classical music or dog music for anxiety.

You can try this dog music CD “through a dogs ear” which a lot of dog owners have found helpful. Start the music right before the fireworks start and see how your dog responds.

He may just ignore it and chew on his toy but it could help when the loud noises start. Alternatively, I’ve included a video with 15 hours of dog music for you to try:

When The Fireworks Start

Once the fireworks start, it’s important you remain calm.

6. Try To Be The Calming Voice And Behave As Normal

Your dog looks up to you as their master and leader. If you remain calm and give a calming voice to your dog, this will help soothe the trauma they are experiencing and ease any fear and anxiety they may have.

I know this works for my dogs as I just give them a gentle reminder that “everything is going to be ok.” The last thing you want to do is show signs of fear or anxiety as this will make the situation worse.

7. Try Thunder shirts For Dogs

For dogs who have bad anxiety or shake when they hear fireworks, you may try a Thunder Shirt for Dogs.

They provide constant, gentle pressure to calm anxiety, fear, and over-excitement. Thunder shirts are great to have for fireworks, thunderstorms, separation anxiety, vet visits and other events that cause your dog anxiety.

If you don’t have a thunder shirt yet, here is a quick tip to make your own:

Ace bandage wrap for dog anxiety

Check out this video to learn how to make a DIY Dog Anxiety Wrap

Other tips and considerations to help calm down your dog during fireworks:

How to calm small dogs during fireworks

I have two small dogs and they are afraid of any loud noises like fireworks or even thunder.

Since fireworks make a loud thunderous boom, they immediately start barking and shaking in fear.

Small dogs seem to be more afraid of fireworks and loud noises, but some large breed dogs can suffer from firework anxiety too.

Here are some tips to help calm small dogs during fireworks:

If you can be home during the fireworks, this is ideal. Just the sound of your voice is very helpful to calm fears in your dog and tell them “everything is going to be ok, it’s ok just some fireworks” and let them cuddle up to you if they feel the need to be protected.

Set aside your anxiety too – try to behave as normal like everything is going to be ok. Dogs will sense your calmness and this will help them feel confident that everything is ok.

Calming treats – you already know there’s going to be fireworks on July 4th, so plan ahead. Make sure you have some good calming treats that you know work. Ideally CDB oil treats. I’ve found CBD to be very helpful for anxious dogs. My beagle mix is scared of everything. CBD takes the edge off for her.

Exercise your dog early in the day before the fireworks begin. Your dog will be tired later and chances are he may just want to calm down and go to sleep when the fireworks begin.

What about dog ear muffs or dog ear plugs for fireworks?

Happy Hoodie is a specialized ear muff you can try for your dog. It provides gentle compression to reduce noises and creates a swaddling effect that calms and comforts your dog. It’s soft and gentle.

Dog sedatives for fireworks

If you have a dog with severe anxiety who is terrified of fireworks, you may want to consider a safe sedative.

Benadryl for dogs – is it safe to give for fireworks anxiety?

I’ve known some dog owners to use Benadryl but I haven’t personally used it on my dogs.

According to Dr. Danel Grimmett, a veterinarian with Sunset Veterinary Clinic in Edmond, Okla, Benadryl is often used for dogs that have mild anxiety during thunderstorms or motion sickness in the car.

It is a relatively save sedative to give your dog, but please contact your vet before considering giving the right dosage to him.

In Conclusion

Key takeaways:

Plan ahead. Knowing the Fourth of July is the worst time of the year for dogs, you now have common-sense tips to help ease the trauma and anxiety associated with dog fireworks anxiety.

If you plan accordingly and take your dog for a nice walk outside before the fireworks start, stock up on your favorite calming treats, create a safe and calming room in your home, your dog should do just fine when the fireworks start.

I hope this list of tips to help keep your dog calm, even if your dog is home alone during fireworks, will help you and your pooch enjoy this special holiday.

If you plan to be away from home often, it’s a good idea to know which dog breeds have the worst separation anxiety.

Or if you already have a dog, maybe you want to know if your dog breed is prone to separation anxiety?

I’ve personally experienced the trauma associated with dogs being left home alone. I don’t think any dog, regardless of their genetic predisposition to separation anxiety, like to be left alone.

Dogs are companion animals and want to be entertained, loved and comforted. They look up to us humans as leaders of the pack and depend on us to make the best decisions for them.

Although any dog of any breed, age, or gender can be anxious, there are certain breeds where separation anxiety is more common. This is important to note when bringing a new dog into your home.

Generally, the more hyperactive the breed, the higher the chance for mental illness including anxiety and dog depression. Therefore, working dog breeds are most susceptible to anxious behavior. Additionally, it is likely that the more intelligent the breed, the higher susceptibility for mental illness as well.

Dog Breeds With Worst Separation Anxiety

The dog breeds listed below as having the major separation anxiety should always be considered a generalization and in no way a certain fact. There are many factors that contribute to dog anxiety and can be mitigated with environmental changes and dog anxiety supplements like CBD. With that being said, the following dog breeds have been found to have some of the worst separation anxiety.

#1 German Shepherd

German Shepherds are known for their intelligence. This is why you see them as police dogs and seeing-eye dogs. On top of that, they tend to thrive off of companionship; they enjoy leading and directing others. This combination of traits means bad news if you plan to leave your dog alone for long periods of time. However, these attributes make for a wonderful watchdog!

#2 Labrador Retriever

Commonly viewed as the happy-go-lucky, family dog, Labrador Retrievers are, in fact, working dogs. They are generally physically active and excel in environments where they have friends i.e. family members, children, or other pets! If you don’t think that you can provide enough exercise or entertainment for your lab, you should consider bringing another playful, friendly pet into the home. This companionship will help keep any anxiety at bay.

#3 Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds need a job to do. As a working dog, they are commonly used to herd livestock or assist in search & rescue. When living as a domestic pet, they often don’t get the amount of exercise they were made to do! As a result, all that pent up energy can emerge as destructive, loud, or even aggressive behavior.

Before leaving your Aussie alone for a significant amount of time, consider taking them to the park for a game of catch or going for a long jog.

#4 Basset Hound

As a hunting dog, the Basset Hound has a very specific job to do. This instinct causes them to be exceptionally devoted to their handler or owner. Therefore, if they are not given enough attention, they can develop anxiety. An anxious Basset Hound’s howl/bay is quite the sound, too!

If you’re leaving your Basset Hound alone or do not have time to give them attention, a good task for them to complete is a treat search. Hide treats around the house, and they will use their super sharp nose to sniff them out!

#5 Border Collie

Border Collies are high energy and very intelligent. Due to these amazing qualities, they can easily get bored. If you plan to leave your young Border Collie at home for 8 hours while you are at work, you might want to reconsider that plan. When bored, dogs can become destructive. With anxiety growing if left alone too long, Border Collies have even been known to develop depression.

To avoid a depressed doggie, try hiring a sitter or walker while you are away. Additionally, you can give your dog a task or something to work on like a challenging new toy or puzzle!

#6 Bichon Frise

Although not quite known for their intelligence or working dog status, the Bichon Frise is incredibly affectionate. They love cuddling up in a lap or traveling with you out in the world. Due to this desire for constant affection and companionship, they can become quite anxious when left alone.

In Conclusion

When you’re ready to bring a new dog into your home, consider the kind of lifestyle you lead. How often are you home? How active are you? Will your dog have other family members to interact with?

It’s common to desire a certain breed based on their looks, but remember that temperament is a far more important factor when picking out the right pet for you. This will make both your life and your new dog’s life the happiest and healthiest!

But remember, always adopt don’t shop. If you find any of these dog breeds at your local shelter and can’t help yourself, go ahead adopt!

If the dog is prone to anxiety, now you already know it before making the decision.

No matter what breed, if you do find that your dog is anxious, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can begin to implement to help them live a happier, calmer life.

So don’t let an anxious dog keep you from saving his life!

Why do dogs like to cuddle?

Over hundreds of years, dogs and man have become interconnected. Dogs like to cuddle for comfort, warmth, and security. At the early stages of their life, cuddling is a basic instinct.

They love to cuddle, play and just be apart of the family. Some dog breeds love to cuddle more than others. Some dog breeds just don’t like to cuddle. If your dog is in pain or is not happy, they may not be affectionate towards you and will shy away from wanting to cuddle with you on the couch. Be aware that some dogs have anxiety and a strong “bear” hug may not be appropriate for some dog breeds.

Then you have dog breeds like Chihuahuas, Dachshunds and Jack Russell Terriers who can show dog cuddling dominance. This usually occurs when they are adults but some show signs of dominance when they are a young puppy. You can correct this behavior over time to make sure dominance doesn’t become a problem. But if your dog insists on cuddling with you, just make sure it’s on your own terms.

The Benefits of Cuddling With Your Dog

Science shows that cuddling with your dog is good for you and your dog!

Dog cuddling releases a hormone called oxytocin which is the same hormone released during childbirth and breastfeeding. It has a calming effect and has been studied extensively by Takefumi Kikusui, an animal behaviorist at Azabu University in Sagamihara, Japan. The results of the study showed that the interactions with human and dog elicit the same type of oxytocin positive feedback loop as seen in mothers and their babies. This is why we feel so connected to our dogs when we cuddle and stare into their eyes.

Is it ok to cuddle my puppy?

Puppies can benefit from a gentle cuddle session too. When they are first born and while breastfeeding with their mother, the same hormone (oxytocin) is released in the mother and puppy. If you have a puppy who’s mother is no longer near, it’s very important that you play a role in feeding and nurturing your puppy the same as her mother would. When that puppy grows up to be an adult, your bond is going to even stronger!

Do dogs like to be stroked?

This depends on the dog breed. I love to message by dogs and they love it too. Messaging your dog with gentle strokes and targetted finger pressure can be very therapeutic to a dog, especially if they are in pain or are senior dogs. I have two senior dogs with hip and joint problems and messaging seems to help. But be careful as to never force any pressure and observe your dog’s reaction when you are stroking him. You don’t want to injure or make his condition worse.

Should you cuddle and sleep with your dog in your bed?

Sleeping with your dog can be comforting for you and your dog. But just know that dogs can have fleas, ticks and other bacteria or chemicals they’ve stepped in with their paws outside. You may not want them sleeping with you unless you know they are clean! Also, if you re-enforce a behavior that it’s ok to sleep in your bed, you may not get them to stop!

Why do dogs like to cuddle under blankets?

My dogs love to burrow and cuddle under blankets. Dogs with anxiety love a comforting blanket as they feel protected. Other dogs may have instincts to dig and have a history of going into caves (think Rat Terriers who were bred to go underground and chase rats). The bottom line is that dogs want to feel secure, warm and comforted.

It’s Clear Dogs Love To Cuddle

I love cute animals but raccoons (sometimes spelled racoon) are pesky and sneaky little critters. They love to dive in trash looking for food scraps to bring back home to their babies. They are true ominvores who eat just about anything.

There’s a high chance if you have outdoor trash cans you’ll find a raccoon at some point. And if you have pets, you probably don’t want to attract other animals like raccoons to come to play with your dogs or cats.

So how can you raccoon-proof garbage cans?

Some say it’s very hard to raccoon proof your garbage cans, but I want to share some ideas with you today that actually work.

Why Do Racoons Eat Garbage?

But first, let’s be clear about why raccoons love eating garbage. Like humans, raccoons are omnivores and have teeth designed to grind plants or tear through meat. They are smart and can solve problems easily (like opening up your trash can lid)! Left in the wild they are skilled at catching fish or stealing eggs using their furry paws. They will eat worms, chickens, berries, acorns or anything they can get their paws on.

So why garbage?

Because most raccoons live near humans, they’ve adapted to find food wherever they can. They are now considered “urbanized” animals.

In heavily populated areas it’s difficult for raccoons to find all of the foods they would normally eat.

They scavenge for food in the backyards of their human neighbors. It’s easy for them and they can’t pass up that smell!

They have acidic stomachs and few get sick from eating the decomposing matter in your trash. They tend to be resistant to bacteria and toxins found in the trash.

But it’s still a good idea to keep them from eating your trash. You don’t want them to think it’s OK to visit your home especially if you have pets or children.

let’s look at the options you have for keeping these clever creatures out of YOUR garbage…

How To Racoon Proof Your Garbage Cans

If you already have a metal or plastic trash can like a standard city garbage can (96 gallons) then all you need is a simple bin strap to lock the trash lid down. You must keep the lid tight so there’s no way an animal can get into the lid, even from the corners of the lid. And if a raccoon or other animal knocks over the trash can, the strap should keep the lid closed even if the garbage can is fully loaded.

Pros and Cons of Bungee Cords or Bin Straps For Trash Can Lids

Pros

Bungee cords and bin straps are cheap to get and easy to install.

If installed correctly and you get a bin strap specifically made for your trash can this should be an effective way to keep animals like raccoons out of your trash.

Cons

Bungee cords can break if the trash can is knocked over.

They are prone to sun exposure causing weakness.

They can “spring” off if incorrectly mounting or cause injury when installing if not careful.

Some raccoons may be too smart and figure out how to remove the straps.

Garbage can raccoon proofing using steel pins

I’ve seen other DIY approaches and kits like Joe’s which require you to buy some parts and have a drill in hand. You simply drill holes in the side of the trash can and place one pin on each side. But as some of you may know, raccoons are sneaky and smart. Chances are, the raccoon will eventually figure out how to remove the pins! You can see the video for yourself below:

Racoon Proof Metal Garbage Cans

If you have a metal trash can, you may be able to use one of the trash can lid straps I just shared with you above. But I have some alternative ideas for you.

Weigh down your lid – this isn’t the fanciest or most secure option but it’s an easy solution. Simply place a heavy rock or cinder block on top of the trash can lid. Just make sure that however needs access to the trash can easily lift them. Again, this isn’t ideal and can be a bit dangerous. But it’s literally free and easy to do if you have some heavy rock laying around.

If you are a DIY person, you could add a padlock to the trash can lid if you don’t already have one with a padlock. Then you can use a lock to secure it.

Consider using raccoon-proof garbage bags. Or at the very least place your garbage in strong and thick plastic trash bags so even if a raccoon does get into your trash there’s one more barrier to entry. MINTX makes a rodent repellent trash bag.

Not my favorite choice but you can also spray rodent sheriff pest control spray around the trash can.

Natural and Safe Racoon and Animal Repellent Alternatives

I am a big fan of natural and safe alternatives because I know my dogs will eventually get into whatever I spray in the yard. In addition to animal-proofing your trash cans you may want to consider my new favorite way to deter pests like raccoons and squirrels (I have a garden that squirrels love getting into) – motion-activated sprinklers!

What I recommend trying is the humane “don’t hurt ’em just squirt em” Orbit Yard Enforcer. It’s a motion-activated sprinkler that works in the day or night to repel animals out of your yard or garden. I haven’t met a raccoon that loves water yet. This just squirts harmless water rapidly as soon as it detects the raccoon within 70 feet.

Build A Wooden Garbage Can Holder

If you are handy with tools and building things, you may want to consider building some type of wooden garbage can storage container or holder. Check out the video below for some ideas.

In Conclusion

Raccoons are smart critters. These clever animals have been known to pry the lids off sealed garbage cans across the country. They frequent camp sites and raid coolers at night. If you have pets you probably don’t want them making friends with raccoons.

To keep pest animals like raccoons from wreaking havoc in your yard and your garbage, the best thing you can do is get the right trash can lock which we’ve listed in this article. To be even more pro-active, new motion-sensing technology is available to harmlessly deter pest animals away from your whole property. I suggest a combination of both especially if you have pets, children or a garden. I hope this helps you make a decision in choosing the best raccoon proof solutions for your outdoor adventures.

Try the Doggy Dare Trash Can Lock. It fits 32 gallon trash cans and is constructed from over 10 feet of durable shock cord with stainless steel hardware. It keeps dogs (and even raccoons) out of the trash! The trash can is not included so if you don’t already have one, then I’d suggest any 32 gallon standard trash can like this Rubbermaid heavy-duty round garbage can.

One more option to dog-proof your trash outside is the Trash Buddy trash can lid. It’s made in the USA and seems to fit different size lids. Check out their video!

Why Do You Need A Dog-Proof Trash Can?

Puppies and younger dogs, especially large-breed dogs can never be trusted! Even if you think your dog is trained and well-behaved, even the sweetest furr babies will find a way to get into the garbage and make a huge mess. Just because he hasn’t found the trash yet doesn’t mean he won’t in the future.

Dogs are smart and they know as soon as you leave the house they can do anything they want! This is when dogs get into the trash the most.

Tips and reasons to keep your dog out and away from the garbage can even if you don’t have a doggie-proofed kitchen or bathroom yet

Garbage is toxic – after ingesting garbage your dog could develop a condition called Garbage Toxicosis or “Garbage Gut” for short. Spoiled foods can contain bacteria like Salmonella.

Dog’s are Olympic sniffers. A dog’s sense of smell is over 10,000 times more sensitive when compared to our own human noses. If you ever spill food in the kitchen make sure you clean it up so Fido can’t pick it up. Carefully managing messes and spills is critical to keeping your dog out of the kitchen in the first place.

Make sure your trash can has a lock on it or at the very least, consider taking the trash outside to your outdoor trash can before leaving the house.

Keep doors to rooms like your bathroom closed when you leave the house. If your kitchen doesn’t have a gate, consider adding a dog gate to keep fido from being curious.

Keep your dog entertained. Often times, a bored dog will go through the trash just because it’s fun and entertaining.

Stress and anxiety also play a factor. Consider adding calming treats or CBD oil to your dog’s diet to keep them relaxed and calm while you are away.

What To Look For in a Dog-Proof Trash Can

So what features should you be looking for in a good trash can that’s dog proof?

Shape and size (capacity) – you want to consider where you will be placing the trash can and how large of a container or trash bag you want to use. Ultimately how frequently will you be taking out the trash? Weight is important because often your dog will tip over the trash can to get the contents out.

Plastic vs Stainless Steel – I try to avoid plastics but stainless steel is going to more expensive. If you have a large dog who can easily destroy a flimsy plastic can, then consider industrial strength plastic, metal or stainless steel. Steel cans also have the advantage of being heavier and harder to knock over.

Keep lids tight and locked – you want to have a tight lid and a lock that makes it easy for you to access but hard for Fido to figure out. All of the dog-proof trash cans on our list achieve this.

Easy to open – I personally prefer having a foot-pedal to make it easy to open and close. Replacing the trash bag should also be easy.

In Conclusion

If your dog has not shown signs of curiosity in the trash yet, at some point he probably will. His sense of smell, lack of entertainment or boredom may eventually lead him to knock over your trash can and leaving you with a huge mess to deal with at the end of the day. Even worse, you may end up having to take him to the vet because of what was in the trash!

You can prevent all of this with reducing smells, keeping your trash locked up, taking the trash out more frequently and keeping rooms like the bathroom closed. The best solution is to invest in a great dog-proof trash can so you never have to worry about your precious furry friend getting sick.

Angora Rabbits are quite possibly the closet animal to resemble cotton balls. Look how adorable and fluffy they are!

The Angora is a domestic rabbit bred for it’s long, soft hair and is one of the oldest of its kind. You can find them in Turkey and has become a common household pet in recent years.

In the past, Turks used them for wool and were popular as pets dating as fart back as the mid-18th century – popular among French Royalty.

Teacup Pomeranian’s are so darn cute and FLUFFY!

But where do these little bundles of cuteness come from? Well, they are a member of the smallest family of Spitz dogs, which include Alaksan Malamute and even Norwegian Elkhound.

The name Pomeranian, comes from the province of Pomerania which is in Germany. The first Pomeranians ever shown to the public was when Queen Victoria allowed some of her Pom’s to be shown during a show.

They are known to be cute, furry and a bit feisty at times. But they are intelligent and loyal companions. While they are cute and fluffy, they are highly intelligent and loyal to their family.

And their coat isn’t the only thing that is unique. Their dark noses and tail can draw quite a look too!

This is a Bichon Frise dog breed (pronounced BEE-shawn FREE-say; the plural is Bichons Frises). A small dog breed with a ton of love to give. They are cheerful and utterly adorable. They have a fluffy white coat and beautiful black eyes and nose.

These are some of the fluffiest creatures on the planet. While they resemble a small llama, they are actually not at all similar.

You can find them grazing in the Andes m,mountains in southern Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile at altitudes of over 13,000 ft. They have coats to protect them from the cold and sunlight exposure.

Some of the primary differences between Alpacas and Llamas include shorter ears, they weigh less and they are very much herd animals while Llamas are a bit more independent.

One of the fluffiest cats on the planet!

Himmie for short, The Himalayan Persian Cat has an amazing coat that comes in all sorts of colors. While this breed is man-made from the 1950’s, you can’t help but adore their beautiful appearance, curiosity, and occasional laziness!

They can be fairly large cats and their coats need to be brushed daily to keep them looking marvelous!

When it’s cold outside you must protect your dog from the freezing temperatures. In fact, in some states it has become illegal to leave your dog outside alone in temperatures below freezing thanks to Libre’s Law. One great way to keep your dog warm and safe is by using a heated dog pad or also known as a heated dog mat.

Today I’m going to share with you the different brand options you have (with pros and cons depending on budget) as well as answer questions regarding safety and usage tips to help you make the best informed decision for your dog. Whether you are indoors or outdoors, there’s a solution for you in this article so keep reading!

In a hurry? Then check out this dog heating pad/warming bed on Amazon — it’s our top pick and will accommodate many dog sizes.

Heated Dog Mats vs. Pads – What’s the difference?

After doing my research I realized that heated dog mats and pads both share the same purpose (to keep your dog warm and comfortable during winter months when it’s freezing outside). It’s just that we humans often use the two terms (mat and pad) to mean the same thing.

Really it’s a heated pet pad you are looking for which can accommodate cats or dogs depending on the size. While I would never recommend leaving your dog outside during freezing temperatures these pads are very handy to have for dogs who live outdoors in a dog house. Better yet, bring fido inside and use one of these heated dog pads to keep their kennel or crate nice and warm!

So now that you know that, how do you choose the right pad for your dog?

Battery powered or 12v options?

Electrical heating pads are far more common, and despite the con of having an electrical cord, most companies ensure that any cords are completely chew-resistant.

Maybe you have a crazy puppy or you don’t have access to an electrical outlet nearby. Perhaps you’d rather purchase batteries than have your electrical bill affected. Whatever your reason, you’re in luck; there are a few battery operated heated dog beds available too!

Electric heated vs self warming?

Self warming beds require no electricity. These beds or mats are designed so the insulation can return the pet’s own body heat to them. Self warming beds require the pet sit on them for a little while in order to radiate heat. And generally, they will not radiate as much heat as an electric heating pad would. There are upsides to self warming beds, however. Self warming beds are a very safe option for those pet parents who need peace of mind while they are away. There are no electrical cords so no need to worry about electrical fires or anything related. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about your pet overheating as the bed’s maximum temperature matches your dog’s body heat.

Dogs that are constantly shivering may do best with an electric heated pad. The pad will be able to raise to a temperature above your dog’s body heat temperature. Many electric pads have a regulation system ensuring that the temperature does not get too hot.

Pressure Activated

Pressure activated heating pads rely on the pressure of the dog to turn on any heat. When your dog is on the mat, the temperature will raise. Pressure activated mats reduce the use of excessive electricity. If your dog prefers it very hot, however, they may do better with a regular, continuous heating pad.

IB SOUND Pressure Activated Heating Pad

If you’d like to give your dog some comforting warmth in the colder months, this pressure activated mat adapats to your dog’s temperature and provides a nice, soothing warmth. It provides an optimum, maximum heat of 102 degrees Fahrenheit and boasts a low, safe voltage so as not to overwork your electricity.

Safety tips when operating a heated dog mat or pad

Whichever route you choose, when choosing a heating pad for your dog consider their behavior: Are they likely to chew through the bed or any cords? Do they just like a little warmth or do they want it nice and toasty?

Other factors to consider are water resistance and temperature control. Is your dog likely to spill their water bowl or have an accident? Do you want it the pad to be able to adjust its temperature?

There are a few heating mat options in this article that get great reviews and have wonderful, practical features for everyday use!

Heated Dog Mats and Pads For Outdoor Use

If you must leave your dog outside in chilly temperatures, it’s a good idea to think about ways to keep them warm. A heated pad would be the perfect addition to a dog house to ensure that your pup is nice and cozy while you are away.

Choosing a dog pad to warm a dog house

When looking for a dog pad to use outdoors, you want to know that what you purchase is durable enough to withstand the outdoor environment. Specifically search for mats that indicate they are for outdoor use; this tells you that the manufacturer intended for the mat to be used outdoors and has used durable materials.

Keep in mind that the heating pad will need to shell out quite a bit of heat to combat the frigid temperature outside. Look for well-known brands and good customer reviews to make sure the pad is up to the challenge!

Another factor to consider when choosing a heating pad for your dog’s dog house is the electrical cord. The electrical cord needs to be able to reach a plug. Additionally, the cord itself should be chew-resistant to ensure that your pup doesn’t get shocked if they want to gnaw on the cord.

So what’s the best outdoor heated dog pad or mat?

K&H Lectro-Soft Outdoor Heated Bed

This company’s previous Lectro-Kennel mat has been manufactured and loved for 30 years. Their Lectro-Soft Outdoor pad is intended for outdoor use. Despite being outside, your dog will enjoy the comfiness of the orthopedic mattress. The outer material is made of a soft, waterproof, durable PVC material, making it a flexible but long-lasting option. The electrical cord is 5.5 feet long and is wrapped in steel to protect your dog from electrical shock.

The bed’s energy efficient, thermostatically controlled heater is designed to match your dog’s own body temperature and will never exceed it, making it comfy, cozy without the risk of scalding your pet’s skin.

With being outdoors, it’s bound to need some cleaning every once in awhile. Thankfully, it’s super easy to clean; just wipe with a damp rag and allow it to fully dry before plugging it back in. If you use the optional, included fleece cover, just pop it in the washing machine.

Heated Dog Mats and Pads For Indoor Use

Even being indoors, your pet can get chilly during winter months. To avoid using a costly heater, you can plop down a heating pad for your dog to lay on.

The heating mat can be placed on the floor or in your dog’s kennel or crate. You can also pop the heating pad underneath your dog’s usual bed or blanket; that way, it will radiate heat upward through their usual comfy setup.

For Large Size Dogs

MARUNDA Heating Pad

A favored heating pad for large dogs is the MARUNDA Heating Pad. The steel wrapped chew-resistant cord is a favorite feature. It’s waterproof and has a removable cover that is machine washable. The built-in dual thermostat keeps your pet from overheating but can reach a nice, toasty temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit. It also boasts a low power usage so as not to increase your utility bills.

For Small or Medium Size Dogs

There are many options for small or medium size dogs. You’ll want to consider the size of the mat as well as the potential temperature it can reach.

RIOGOO Pet Heating Pad

RIOGOO’s best feature is its auto power off. Set the time anywhere from 0-12 hours, and it will turn off when the timer is up. You can also set the temperature up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 7 layers of protection will prevent your dog from being burnt. There is also a chew-resistant power cord. Although safety is its best feature, RIOGOO is also very easy to clean; simply wipe off the removable cover.

If you have a very small dog, consider the Snuggle Safe Microwaveable Pet Bed. This non-electrical bed can retain heat for up to 10 hours, and it is the perfect size for your small dog. Simply pop the Snuggle Safe Pet Bed under your pet’s usual bed, and it will radiate heat.

I’m on a budget what’s the cheapest option?

Mospro’s Pet Warming Bed is affordable at just $18.99. Measuring 18” by 18” it can accommodate many dog sizes. It has some pretty fancy features despite its favorable price point. The favorite feature: its rapid heating capability allows it to heat within 5 minutes.

I don’t care about cost, what’s the best option?

K&H has been making warming pet beds for 30 years. They offer a variety of sizes, styles, and features, so you are sure to find something that fits your needs.

Some popular styles include the Igloo style, the comfy indoor mat, the self-warming pad, and the Thermo-Snuggly Sleeper.

Is a heated dog mat good enough for below zero temperatures?

If you’re worried about your dog in below zero temperature, consider the facts. Will your dog be indoors or outdoors? How big is your dog? Are they shivering?

Obviously, if your pet is outdoors in below zero temperature, you will need to find other ways to keep your dog warm and happy. Consider a space heater and blankets galore. Of course, the best option, if possible, would be to bring them indoors when the weather is not so pleasant.

Indoors while it’s below zero temperature, your pet is safe from any rain, sleet, snow, or wind. Many dogs will be just fine with a nice heating pad.

However, some may still be chilly. You can provide them with ample blankets and places to lay. Additionally, you can use your central heater or a space heater.

You won’t be able to tell if your dog has a fever without understanding her normal temperature. In general, dogs have temperatures between 101 and 102.5 °F. Since this is a few degrees hotter than what is normal for a human, your dog may feel like she has a temperature to you even when her temperature is normal.

There is a variation between breeds and individual dogs as to what is normal. A new study has found that smaller dogs tend to have higher body temperatures, according to NBC News. This may be because smaller animals tend to have higher metabolic rates. Whatever the reason, it is important to note that your small dog will generally run a higher temperature than your large-breed dog. Dogs with thin or no hair may feel hotter to us than other dogs even though their temperature is not higher than that of other dogs.

It is a good idea to become accustomed to normal temperature for your particular dog. Use the suggested techniques for determining your dog’s temperature frequently so that you will know what her nose, armpits, gums, and general appearance and behavior are like normally.

A complete understanding of your healthy dog will enable you to quickly detect any irregularities. The best way to detect a fever in your dog is to know her well.

Ways to tell if your dog has a fever without using a thermometer

The best way to tell if your dog has a fever is to use a thermometer, usually inserted into the rectum, but occasionally to be used for the armpits or ears. A high-quality ear thermometer is a good tool for every pet owner to have available to them, since measuring temperature rectally can be difficult at home. Thermometers are inexpensive and a valuable tool to help you evaluate your dog’s health.

That said, even if you don’t have a thermometer on hand, or if the one you have appears to be faulty, you can do some other tests to tell you if your dog has a fever. You know your dog well, and if she isn’t feeling well she is likely to tell you with her behavior and appearance. If you suspect that your dog is running a fever, you can examine her paws, ears, nose, gums, armpits, and groin to help you tell for sure.

Dog’s paws and ears

Most of our dog’s bodies are covered with fur, so finding places that naturally do not have hair is a good way of getting as close to your dog’s temperature as possible. Your dog’s paws are a good indication of her overall temperature in neutral external temperature conditions. It is also very easy to feel your dog’s paws, and most dogs won’t be overly bothered by this.

Feeling your dog’s paws is not a good indication of temperature if the ground is cold or hot since your dog’s paws are making continuous contact with the ground. If you would like to feel your dog’s paws to tell her temperature when the ground is hot or cold, set your dog on a thick towel, blanket, or other fabric to allow her paws to return to the temperature of her body.

Ears are similar to paws in that they are good indications of temperature assuming that the outside temperature is not extreme. Ears are one of the first parts of a dog to feel cold in chilly temperatures. If your dog’s ears feel normal but it is cold out your dog may still have a fever. Bring your dog into a heated space for some time and then feel her ears in order to get an accurate gauge of her temperature.

Dog’s Nose

A dog’s nose is a classic way to tell how she is feeling. There are plenty of stories about a dog’s nose being cold and wet. It is true that a dog’s nose should feel cold and wet, but dogs frequently have dry, warm noses in the absence of fever. If you are running your heat or for other reasons, there are unusually dry conditions your dog’s nose may get dry, just like yours does.

If your dog’s nose is dry or warm but there is no other sign of illness like nasal discharge or lethargy, and especially if you are running your heater, you may have no need to worry about fever. If, however, your dog’s nose is dry or warm and with nasal discharge, and your dog is acting lethargic or showing other signs of fever, this can be a good sign that your dog isn’t feeling well.

Armpit or groin

Just like us, your dog’s lymph nodes swell when she gets sick. In the armpits and groin you will be able to feel lymph nodes if they become swollen. On some dogs, you can even see the swollen lymph nodes. Hold your dog on her back or ask her to roll over for you so that you can feel and look for swollen lymph nodes. If your dog is showing other signs of sickness but does not seem to have a fever, swollen lymph nodes can be a good indication that your dog will soon develop a fever.

Gums

A dog’s gums are a great indication of overall health. Gums are one of the parts of your dog’s body that you should be very familiar with. Check your dog’s gums when she is active, when she is resting, and at all sorts of different times in her life. By being familiar with the way that your dog’s gums look, you will be able to tell when they are off. It is also important to maintain their dog’s dental help so that gums do not become red and swollen all the time. Unhealthy gums are not a good indication of temperature or healt.

Healthy gums are pink or mottled pink and black, depending on your dog’s coloration. Most dogs have at least some pink on their gums. Gums that are darker than normal may not be getting enough oxygen. Gums that are swollen and reddish can indicate fever.

Moistness, as well as color, is an indication of the healthiness of the gums. Your dog’s gums should feel similarly moist to your own. Dry gums, like a dry nose, can indicate illness.

Low Body Temp

Dogs may develop dangerously low body temperatures due to external conditions or shock. You can feel a dog’s extremities like paws, ears, and gums to tell if her temperature is unusually low. Your dog will also shake or develop goosebumps as indications of a very low body temperature. If there is no clear reason for a low temperature like your dog being outside in the cold for some time, your dog may be seriously ill. A low temperature can develop in the case of shock or sepsis.

Behavior and appearance

You know your dog better than anyone. If she is not feeling well, you are probably the first to know. If your dog alters from her normal routine, loses interest in things that normally give her pleasure, refuses food or treats, or seeks attention from you for no apparent reason and can’t be satisfied, these can all be indications that your dog isn’t feeling well.

Have you ever been told at the beginning or end of an illness that you don’t look good? Just like us, our dogs can simply look sick. Droopy eyes and ears, a tight mouth, or excessive panting can all show pain or illness. If your dog just doesn’t look good, there’s a real chance that she is sick.

Ok my dog has a fever, what can you give a dog for a fever?

If you have thoroughly examined your dog and determined that she has a fever, you are doubtless wondering if there is something that you can do to bring down her fever or if you will need to bring her to the vet.

Here are a few reasons your dog may have a fever and things you might be able to do to address the underlying cause as well as the fever itself.

Common Dog Fever Symptoms and Underlying Causes

Dogs that have a fever generally acts lethargic, with drooping ears and depressed attitudes. If your dog has a runny or dry nose, red or dry gums, or any of the other symptoms discussed above, you can feel even more confident that your dog has a fever.

Your dog may have a fever because of a simple cold with flu-like symptoms similar to what you might experience. Some bacterial or viral infections like this may be relatively benign, while others can be dangerous. Some like Bordetella, otherwise known as Kennel Cough, can be highly contagious and dangerous for very young, old, or immune-compromised dogs.

If your puppy is showing signs of fever, especially with vomiting and diarrhea, it is possible that she is suffering from Parvo, an extremely dangerous disease that often kills.

Many dogs respond to vaccination with a fever, especially if it is the first time they’ve gotten the vaccinations or if they received multiple vaccinations at a time. If your dog acts mildly lethargic and runs a mild fever after vaccinations or monthly flea/heartworm control, is generally not a cause for concern.

Your dog could respond to any infection with a fever. The culprit could be an infected cut or external injury, an ear infection, a urinary tract infection, a tooth infection, or an infection of some organ. If your dog is displaying a high fever without nasal discharge, and especially if you know of some kind of injury, it is highly possible that your dog is suffering from an infection.

Your dog may also have a fever because she ingested something poisonous. If your dog has recently gotten into the medicine cabinet or trash and is now showing a fever, there’s a good chance it is because she ate something dangerous. A foreign body like a stick or sock that has been eaten can become lodged in your dog’s stomach or intestines and lead to a fever as well.

Tick-related illnesses are another very common cause of fever, especially long-term or recurring fever without explanation or other symptoms.

Why do dogs get a fever (normal immune response – what is the underlying issue)

A fever is a common and normal reaction to a wide range of assaults against the body. A fever is the body’s immune response to infection. This is because hot temperatures are less desirable for a wide range of viruses and bacteria to live and reproduce. Bringing up the body’s temperature is a generic response that can often have a beneficial effect against all kinds of attacks. It can be so hard to identify the cause of a fever because so many different triggers can cause a fever.

What you can do to lower the fever at home

If you have determined that your dog has a fever but you are not yet concerned enough to bring your dog to the vet, there are things that you can do to reduce the severity and duration of the fever.

There is an old saying that says “starve a fever”. In fact, this is good advice both for dogs and humans. If your dog Is experiencing a fever, there is a good chance that she is choosing not to eat already, but do not feel it necessary to encourage her to eat, and in fact, it isn’t wise to withhold food.

According to Scientific American, adding food to a body that is having an immune response can further aggravate the nervous system, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system when the sympathetic nervous system is already in overdrive. Furthermore, when your dog’s body is hypersensitive to potential danger, it could misinterpret something that your dog eats as dangerous and react to it.

How to cool down your dogs temp (hydration/damp towel etc)

The safest way to cool down your dog when she is suffering from a fever is to use plenty of cool water. Encourage your dog to drink more water so that she does not become dehydrated. If your dog is reluctant to drink provide ice chips. Many dogs will lick at ice chips when they will not otherwise drink water.

You can tell if your dog is dehydrated by pulling up your dog’s skin. If the skin springs back your dog is hydrated and if it does not move then she is severely dehydrated. You can tell how dehydrated your dog is by how quickly her skin returns to normal when you pull it.

You can cool your dog by soaking towels with cool water and wrapping them around your dog’s paws and ears. Keep changing out the towels to keep them cool.

You should not give your dog any kind of human medications like aspirin to lower her temperature. There are veterinary medications that can bring down fever in dogs, and some veterinarians do recommend aspirin for some dogs, but dogs do not respond to medication like humans do, so you should consult your vet before giving your dog any kind of over the counter medication. Furthermore, since a fever is so often a response to something, reducing the fever may put your dog in more danger than letting it run its course.

Monitor and give them time and rest

If your dog is suffering from a mild fever, it is best to monitor closely, be sure that your dog stays hydrated, and let her rest. Rest and plenty of water is often the best cure for the fever and whatever is causing it as well. If the fever is mild and there are no other concerning symptoms, there is a good chance that your dog will work through it on her own.

Isolate your dog while she is ill so that no other pets are infected. Do not worry, however, about catching something from your dog, as there are very few diseases that cause a fever that can be transmitted from dog to person.

Consult your vet

You will know that it is time to consult your veterinarian if you can detect that your dog’s temperature is higher than 103°F. If your dog has a temperature over 106°F, you have a severe emergency on your hands. Cool your dog down while you bring her to the vet. If your dog is displaying other symptoms of illness like severe lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, or concerning behavioral changes, or if the fever has gone on for more than a day or so without showing marked improvement, it is time to bring your dog to the vet.

It is also a good idea to have your dog checked out if she seems to frequently suffer from mild fevers for no apparent reason, as this can indicate an underlying disorder.
