It was about six months ago, when King was thought to be a monster because of the way that he looked.

He would stand on the side of a fairly busy road in Madera Ranchos, California. He would look hunched over in pain and had wounds and scabs all over his body. This is what made many people scared to stop and check on him.

By the looks of it, King did not have much time left to live. He was hurt, starving, and extremely sick. Then one day, his luck changed for the better.

When an online post went up about the dog, Megan Bowe, who is a dog rescuer, ran to be by his side. She wanted to see what she could do to help him. She had no idea just how bad he was.

Source: Megan Bowe

Bowe is the founder of Bowe’s Adoptive Rescue Pups and she said, “He really was on his last leg.” She said that he could barely stand up. Bowe took him to a veterinarian and the results were horrible. He had scabies, a broken tail, and a broken leg. The injuries looked as if a car had hit him.

Source: Megan Bowe

With a team of veterinarians, Bowe helped get King back on his feet. He needed surgery, medications, and physical therapy. He was able to walk again with all of their help.

After months of care, King would find a wonderful home. Tiana Bisbee had been watching the story on social media and knew he was the pup to add to her family. Bisbee has three other dogs that love King just as much as she does.

A woman in Ohio overheard a man discussing his hunting dog. The man said that he would have to kill his Beagle because the young dog refused to hunt.

Stepping In

The woman interrupted the man and asked if she would be able to find the Beagle a suitable rescue home. The man agreed, and she went to work.

First, she called her mother who is active in the rescue world. Her mother put together a Facebook post about the poor Beagle.

Sure enough, the founder of HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary, Schenley Hutson Kirk, replied to the Facebook post and said she would be willing to take the young Beagle in.

Source: Schenley Hutson Kirk

The young woman went to the man’s house to retrieve the Beagle and was appalled at his living conditions. The poor dog was living outside in a blue barrel filled with straw. Later named Jeffrey, the Beagle was scared and suffering from a severe flea allergy. Nevertheless, he was so loving toward his rescuer.

Hound Rescue and Sanctuary took him in and had him checked out by a vet. Besides his flea allergy, this 14-month-old pup was in good health!

Source: Schenley Hutson Kirk

A Second Chance

Jeffrey was placed in a foster home where he continued to show humans his sweet, loving nature.

“Loud sounds scare him — he had obviously never been in a home before — so just the sound of the coffee pot brewing or the sound of a toaster, sounds he’d never heard before, he has some fear of,” Kirk told The Dodo. “He’s coming out of his shell, though — he’s very playful. He’s the sweetest little thing you’ll ever meet.”

Jeffrey is living his best life now. He loves playing with other dogs and with his toys.

Source: Schenley Hutson Kirk

“Jeffrey adores his stuffed toy and takes it with him everywhere he goes,” Kirk said. “It is sad to think that this is the first toy he has ever had. He never even knew what a toy was until now.”

It’s so wonderful to know that this sweet pup was saved from death just because he didn’t want to hunt. He is now being prepared for finding a forever home of his own where he will get all the snuggles, toys, and play time.

Sometimes, bulldogs get a bad rep of being “bullies.” (This of course is usually far from the truth). Stanley, a rescue dog from the Christchurch Bull Breed Dog Rescue, defies the status-quo. Sam Clarence, Stanley’s “human dad,” first came across the sweet and loyal companion while volunteering at the nearby shelter.

One day, a mother and her two six-month-old pups were found in an abandoned apartment. Clarence was asked to care for one of the pups for just a week. That week grew into months, then years. It was clear they would permanently be a part of each other’s lives.

Source: Sam Clarence

From the moment he saw Stanley, Clarence fell in love at first sight. However, Stanley was not yet able to share the same feelings towards his admirer. According to the Dodo, Stanley “was terrified” when the two of them rode off to Sam’s home. “It took him an hour to slowly come out of the car.” When the dog warmed up enough to proceed, he was greeted with a bath, good food, and a comfy fireside bed. This loving treatment was certainly not something he was accustomed to.

Trust takes time to build, but Clarence gave Stanley everything he needed to live the life of a pampered pup. Soon, Stanley began eating and drinking from a bowl, feeling snug and secure, and closer to human companionship than he ever felt in his life. Clarence recalls that “As a pup, he would sleep with me on the bed and we could never not be touching. If I moved, he moved.”

While Stanley’s puppy days are long past, he still holds on to his dad’s hand, no matter where they are. This becomes a challenge when Clarence needs to drive for a road trip, especially since Stanley can be quite forceful if they aren’t touching at all times.

“If I’m driving we have to be in contact or he will force it upon me,” says Clarence. But he enjoys lavishing his favorite traveling partner with loads of affection no matter what time it is. “If we are watching TV, same thing. I will get paws flying at me until I touch him. It’s just his quirk. If I’m not around he will do it to my housemate as well.”

Screenshot: Sam Clarence

These days the happy-go-lucky man and dog pair are never alone and Stanley finally feels comfortable and happy with the world around him. “Whenever Stanley sees a beach, river, or lake, he jumps right in” Clarence said, recalling the outdoor adventures they enjoyed around New Zealand. There is nothing that has made Stanley as happy as having a place he knows will be his “forever home.”

Screenshot: Sam Clarence

Separation anxiety is one of the things several rescue dogs face as they transition between different owners or from a shelter to a home. Being switched off to so many places leaves an imprint on the dog’s thinking. It begins to question “Am I really wanted here?” “Will they take me away again?” There is always a fear that the new home may be just one of many. But for Stanley, and his dad Clarence, these questions are out of question.

He relied solely on the scraps of food from passing truckers.

A local delivery driver always saw poor Larry as she passed by on her delivery route. As it became more and more clear that Larry was homeless, she made him a profile on Instagram to help bring attention to the poor 8-year-old dog.

Sasha Abelson, president of Love Leo Rescue, saw Larry’s Instagram profile an immediately reached out to volunteers in Larry’s area.

Source: Love Leo Rescue

“As soon as we saw [the posts] we said, ‘Just get the dog to us, we’ll take care of the rest,’” Abelson explained to The Dodo.

Volunteers picked Larry up and delivered him to Los Angeles.

They found that Larry had a bloated stomach, many missing patches of hair, and a difficult time walking. On top of that, he looked defeated and sad. Yet despite this, he wagged his tail for his rescuers.

The local vet diagnosed Larry with Cushing’s disease, a disease caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland. This accounted for his lack of energy, grumpy, and sad demeanor. But Love Leo Rescue though that there had to be a sweet boy under all that.

Larry lived at the vet for a month to help treat his disease. “In that time he was kind of sad, and a little depressed and reactive with other dogs,” Abelson said, “so we weren’t sure if he could live with another dog safely.”

Soon enough, and as Love Leo Rescue predicted, Larry began feeling better and even enjoying the company of other dogs. He moved from the vet to a dog daycare facility, and Love Leo Rescue began searching for his forever home.

Searching for His Forever Home

The search for his home was tough. “Not everyone wants a dog with an automatic expense attached,” Abelson said. “And he doesn’t like being alone, but he’s been abandoned, so we can’t really blame him for that. He’s just a happy, grateful dog. He just wants someone to take care of him and be there for him.”

The rescue group tried out three different forever homes for Larry, but he was always sent back. He just needs a little extra love and attention.

Source: Love Leo Rescue

“He’ll literally push up against you and ask for his head to be pet and his ears to be scratched,” Abelson said. “He’s not pushy, but he’s very affectionate.”

Abelson continued, “Some dogs have a bad experience or are abandoned and it scars them for the rest of their lives, but with him — he’s just so sweet, he needs someone to realize that. It’s a little bit like a Cinderella looking for her slipper. We know they’re out there and we’re willing to wait for the perfect person.”

Source: Love Leo Rescue

To learn more about this special boy visit Love Leo Rescue, and be sure to share his story with others to help him find his perfect forever home.

Update! Since sharing this story, Larry finally found a new home. Larry is curled up in a soft bed and surrounded by people who love him. You can read more of his story here on Instagram.

When it comes to bringing new members to the family, just ask Joe Biden how it feels. He supports fostering animals and now adopting them 100%! He has been fostering a German Shepherd named Major, and now he and his wife, Jill Biden, are the proud permanent parents of him.

Source: STEPH GOMEZ VIA DELAWARE HUMANE ASSOCIATION

The Bidens first heard about Major when they were browsing social media. The Delaware Humane Society had posted some pictures up about a new litter of puppies that had been just dropped off. They said that the puppies “were not doing well at all.” Biden wanted to help out in any way that he could so he and Jill contacted the Humane Society to help.

Major has five other siblings and the Delaware Humane Society was proud to announce that they all had been adopted by very loving and caring parents.

The Biden’s already have a German Shepherd named Champ, and the two of them were given some trouble when they found him through a breeder and not through a humane society. They were so happy when they found Major and have done everything that they can in order to support the Delaware Humane Society. The Humane Society is very grateful for the help that the Bidens have given to them.

Max is a lovable puppy. His family adores him and they enjoy playing and running with him. The family got caught in the California wildfire that is destroying the state. They began to worry that he would be lost forever.

Source: Michel Yeager

When the fire began, the Yaeger family knew they were in grave danger. When they began to evacuate, they couldn’t find Max. This is when they knew they may never see him again.

“We have a pretty big yard and he always likes to hide under our porch when he’s scared and I wasn’t able to get to him,” Yeager told The Dodo. “I saw the fire ash falling from the sky and I knew I had to get my girls out. We were only able to stay for less than five minutes.”

After evacuating, the Yaeger family found out that there was nothing left of their home, just days after. This is when it started to kick in that Max was probably gone too. They did not lose hope though. They used social media as their outlet to continue the search for him.

Source: Michel Yeager

Then, they saw a news video about a dog named Max! They thought it was someone else’s dog at first. He looked nothing like their Max. They took a chance and called the man who put the video up.

“My husband Jeff was actually looking through news videos on Facebook and came across one that said they found a dog named Max by Stratton’s Market on Sawmill,” Yeager said. “We live about a few houses down, so we called up the news person [and] asked how he knew his name and everything, and he described his collar.”

When they heard what the collar looked like, they knew it was their Max! They went to get him and were saddened by the way that he looked. His fur was burned and he was in a world of pain. He was extremely happy to be back with his family again though.

Governor Tom Wolf leads the pack in his new legislation on improving animal welfare. It’s “history in the making” according to Kristen Tullo, director of the Humane Society in Pennsylvania. Effective on August 2017, Gov. Wolf’s “Act 10” would call for much stricter punishments for abuse, cruelty, and neglect committed against animals. It would also clearly define what these forms of cruelty entail.

“Far too long we have heard stories of neglected and abused animals who suffered and died because of deplorable treatment and horrible living conditions. I am proud that we will now hold our pet and animal owners to a higher standard of humanity” said Wolf during his proposal.

The bill was named in honor of Libre, a Boston Terrier puppy in Lancester, PA who was found barely surviving after being in a cage, neglected, for months. Fortunately, Janine Guido of Speranza Animal Rescue saved him in time and enabled him to live the much better life he has today.

Components of the bill include (1) improved tethering conditions for dogs kept outside while owners are shopping etc., (2) added protection for horses equal to those of dogs and cats, (3) increased penalties for animal neglect, cruelty, and aggravated cruelty, (4) ensured forfeiture of the owner’s pet in case of abuse, and (5) civil immunity for vets reporting abuse.

One of the main issues the law addresses is leaving a dog alone outside for over 30 minutes in temperatures below 32 degrees or above 90 degrees F. This is now being recognized as a CRIME in Pennsylvania, punishable by law with up to $750 in fines and 90 days in prison. Violators who have committed aggravated crimes, those maiming or killing a dog on purpose, may receive up to several years of imprisonment. Such laws are necessary, Gov. Wolf says, will “hold our pet and animal owners to a higher standard of humanity.”

Yet even these measures “won’t stop animal abuse.” Jennifer Nields of Lancaster County Animal Coalition knowingly said. However, they “will emphasize the importance of justice for animal suffering.” It is about time that animals who are not able to speak the language that we do are given a voice and rights to live protected lives in which they feel cared for and loved.

This winter, make sure that your dog remains safe and warm and protected from cold weather. The first sign to check is the dog’s paws. Cold paws means that the ground is too cold and your dog is actually suffering from the weather. So make sure to bring your loyal companion inside! If you see a dog that looks like it has been outside for a while, be sure to take the time to inform the authority and protect that pup! You will be saving a life and upholding the law.

See our best cold weather pet tips to keep your dogs and pets warm in the winter.

While this law is currently only effective in Pennsylvania, one state does make a big difference! Gandhi once said that “the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” In this sense, Libre’s law not only protects humankind’s best friend but may be upholding humankind to its highest standards.

IKEA is a terrific place for shopping and now, shoppers in Catina, Italy, can find more than good deals. This store is welcoming stray dogs to warm up during the cold, winter months.

Shoppers have noticed dogs in the store. They have been taking pictures and videos of them and putting them on social media. These dogs are getting quite the attention these days.

Most of the pictures on social media feature the dogs sleeping on rugs and enjoying being in a warm and cozy spot.

Source: Instagram @dako.photo

Martine Taccia, a regular customer, told the Dodo that “the dogs receive daily food and pampering from IKEA’s employees and customers. Some dogs have even found a new family.”

IKEA prides itself on helping out animals in need. They have been partners with the Home For Help in the past and they urge other store owners to help out as much as they can. The winter months can be harsh on animals who do not have a home, so that is why IKEA wants to do as much as they can to help these animals in need.

Source: Instagram @noahromley

We hope that other stores will also take note of this and try to protect animals from the cold and snowy conditions that come during the winter months.

A man awaited their arrival, intending to sell them in Houston.

Source: Chicago French Bulldog Rescue

A Dangerous Journey

When the puppies arrived, the man loaded them into a moving van and began the drive from Chicago to Houston. The puppies were packed in and to make matters worse, the van was un-air-conditioned.

Source: Chicago French Bulldog Rescue

Thankfully, the van was pulled over in Texarkana by Texas state troopers. The state troopers opened the back of the van to find 27 puppies, packed like sardines and exhausted from the heat. They found that the temperature in the back of the van was 121 degrees. Additionally, the puppies didn’t have access to food or water.

It’s no wonder, then, that 1 puppy had already died during transit.

Source: Chicago French Bulldog Rescue

After the rescue, 4 additional puppies died, from conditions likely made worse from their horrible transit.

Source: Chicago French Bulldog Rescue

The 23 remaining puppies were flown from Texarkana to Chicago where they were picked up by the Chicago French Bulldog Rescue. They are currently undergoing recovery and rehab as many of them suffered greatly from heat exhaustion.

In Need of a Miracle

“I could see that she needed out,” Heather told The Dodo. “My background is medicine and surgery from the military, so I knew her time was growing short.”

Source: Heather Blazina

But Heather had to act quickly. The sick puppy was on the euthanasia list and set to be put down tomorrow.

Heather reached out to Adoption First Animal Rescue for help. “I said, ‘If you pull her, I will foster and vet her,’” Heather said.

When the rescue group agreed, Heather was elated! She pulled the sweet pup from the shelter and named her Amaani.

Source: Heather Blazina

Heather’s first plan of attack as Amaani’s foster was to treat the poor puppy’s mange – the condition causing her fur loss.

But Amaani didn’t respond to the mange medication.

Source: Heather Blazina

“I was kind of scratching my head, and after repeated visits to the vet, she was actually diagnosed with distemper,” Heather told The Dodo.

This was not great news. Distemper is often fatal for young puppies. But Heather decided not to give up and worked hand-in-hand with the vet to treat Amaani.

With proper medication, Amaani pulled through.

Source: Heather Blazina

Heather explained to The Dodo, “Amaani means ‘hope, aspirations, wishes and desires.’ We actually named her while she was still in the shelter. She has definitely lived up to her name.”

After treatment, Amaani’s hair began to grow back. Heather noticed, however, that Amaani wasn’t growing at all; she was staying puppy-sized.

Source: Heather Blazina

“I discussed her size with the vet and we believe the distemper has stunted her growth,” Heather said. “She’s not going to get very much bigger.”

Hopes, Aspirations, Wishes, And Desires

Recovering nicely, Amaani is enjoying foster life at Heather’s house, where she gets to play with all of Heather’s other dogs and learn how to live with cats.

Source: Heather Blazina

“I have 10 dogs here,” Heather revealed. “She blends well with all of them, but her pal is the 70-pound Dogo Argentino. Amaani would actually chew on Lily’s ear, thinking it would come off, and Lily would just allow it. But she gets along with all the other dogs, and has really no interest in cats.”

When she’es not playing with her doggy friends, Amaani is the biggest attention seeker!

Source: Heather Blazina

Heather said, “She’s a diva. She loves to be held with her front paws over the shoulder and be carried around. I even bought a pouch for her to carry in front until she grew too big for that. She’s a great companion dog. She will complete pretty much any household, just because of her size and her personality, and her ease of getting along with different personality dogs.”

Source: Heather Blazina

Although Amaani isn’t quite ready to move to her forever home, Heather is already searching for the perfect home for this tenacious gal. Heather knows that Amaani will adapt quite nicely to whatever home she is given.
