She began browsing for adoptable dogs right away. That’s when she came across the saddest shelter photo ever!

The Saddest Dog Ever

Benji’s sad face caught Jessica’s eye, and she wanted to learn more about him. She found out that he had been found as a stray in Los Angeles. He had lost a lot of his fur due to flea allergies and was extremely unsure of people.

“He was at the shelter for 10 days and wasn’t handling it well,” Jessica told The Dodo. “He would snarl and snap at people as they walked by. I had never seen a sadder dog and knew we couldn’t leave him there.”

Determined to save this poor guy, Jessica and her boyfriend hopped in the car in Sacramento and drove the 6 hours to Los Angeles. When the couple arrived at the shelter and told the staff they were looking to adopt Benji, the shelter staff seemed hesitant to help.

“The shelter also told us he wasn’t friendly and refused to take us into a calm waiting area to get to know him because ‘he wouldn’t be a dog that would come over to us to be cuddly,’” Jessica explained. “We knew that he had a high possibility of being euthanized and didn’t want him to die.”

Despite the warnings, Jessica and Jared were determined to make things work. They adopted Benji and made the long, difficult trek home. Once home, Benji stayed away. He was still very wary of this new environment and people.

Where’d Benji Go?

After a few days, it was as if a new dog replaced Benji. Benji came out of his shell. He had realized that he had his safe, forever home.

Jessica said, “He loves to come up and lick our faces and play with his toys. He is such a goofball now! He has crazy zoomies after he gets bathed. He will also start barking the second we get in the car as if to say, ‘We have to start moving! Let’s go!’”

What a transformation! Although Benji still has some confidence to build, he sure has blossomed into a playful and sweet pup! Jessica and Jared are very glad they took the risk they had. Otherwise, they never would have had this adorable pup in their family!
