___TVE_SHORTCODE_RAW__
Injured and in need of a forever home, Frankie the pug found his way into the life of Izabella St. James.

St. James runs The Pug Queen, a Facebook page about her life as a pug rescuer. She learned about Frankie the pug from a friend of hers and knew she needed to help!

“It was a couple weeks before I was supposed to move, and I had so many dogs and I was totally overwhelmed with the amount of rescues,” St. James told The Dodo. “But a friend reached out to me and said, ‘FYI, there is little boy pug who is completely injured.’ There was a post somewhere on Facebook that someone had got him, and he needed help and couldn’t walk, and they didn’t know how to help him. And she said, ‘Would you be willing to help him?’”

As St. James writes on her Facebook page “No pug left behind on my watch!”, it no surprise she steps in to help right away. She works to pick up Frankie as soon as possible.

When St. James saw Frankie for the first time, she felt such compassion for him. The poor little pug had suffered serious injuries at only 4 months old.

“I took him to my vet to do some scans and testing and X-rays, and [the vet] told me that not only was his pelvis broken, but his hips were broken, his femur was shattered and his knees were out of place,” St. James said. “He also had a break in his front leg and a major ulcer in his eye.”

Frankie had a peculiar burn on his back as well. “It looked like a hot water burn or something like that,” St. James said.

No one will ever know exactly what happened – Frankie’s injuries were mysteriously acquired. All St. James knew was what was stated on Facebook.

“The story was that he belonged to some backyard breeder,” St. James said. “They sold some puppies, and they gave [Frankie] to their cousin’s boyfriend. I don’t know if he was a pug person, but his intention was to keep him in the garage and breed him when he gets older. How you put a tiny little puppy into a garage and keep him there is beyond me.”

Not long after this, Frankie lost his ability to walk. His injuries grew worse, causing the man to return the pug to the breeder.

“My vet ventured a guess that it’s possible they ran him over in the car … and dragged him,” St. James said.

Regardless of what took place, Frankie needed medical attention and quick! He has already had one surgery, and will certainly need at least one more as well as physical therapy.

“I can’t even fathom the amount of pain and suffering this little baby has gone through,” St. James said.

St. James is looking to get Frankie a wheelchair once he has undergone his next surgery. For now, Frankie drags his lower body around.

“I got him a bunch of ‘drag bags,’” St. James said. “Literally, it’s a bag that you put the lower half of the body in, and you kind of fasten it around his legs. So when he drags his legs around … it protects the skin from not getting scraped.”

Frankie did not feel comfortable with the drag bags. “He doesn’t want to walk around in them,” St. James said. “Or the other pugs pull on it — they think it’s a toy.”

So, St. James moved to trying other things – including adorable pajamas and socks.

“We have different colors and different styles,” St. James said. “It’s all about protecting him.”

And of course, Frankie looks adorable.

“I can’t even when he sits there in his little sockies,” she said. “Sometimes he doesn’t want me to put them on — he’ll put his little pawsies up and it’s really funny. But once they’re on, I think he knows that it allows him more movement when he has them on.”

Frankie is a happy dog that will not let life get him down, no matter what he has been through.

“He just wants to be a normal pug,” St. James said. “He wants to get out and play with the others. He tries so hard to be part of the group.”

“He’s very feisty,” she added. “When the other pugs are playing, he rushes over and gets in the middle of everything. So my nickname for him is ‘The Supervisor.’ If there’s any action, Frankie is there.”

St. James does everything she can to give Frankie the most mobility he can have.

“My hope is that he will be very mobile and independent with the wheels,” she said. “And if he could stand and walk and go potty on his own, that would be amazing. Because he tries. When he’s eating his food, he tries to get up. Sometimes I hold his little tushy up. And I know when he goes potty, he tries to stand up.”

Frankie never gives up, no matter how difficult things become. He is made of pure love!

“He’s extremely loving,” St. James said. “Every time I take him out and pick him up, he instantly starts kissing me, and he will give me a million kisses.”

“He’s just such a great, resilient little boy,” she added. “There’s a lesson there for all of us to overcome and keep going. No matter what has been done to him, it hasn’t affected his spirit as well.”

Source: The Dodo

__TVE_SHORTCODE_RAW___

When Havlinek saw Nubz on Facebook, everything changed. Nubz had been a rescue dog from a Missouri puppy mill, where he lost his rear paws.

A video was posted of Nubz working to overcome his condition with physical therapy. After seeing this, Havlinek had to apply to adopt him.

Havlinek’s application was approved, and it was time to head to Nubz! He got into his RV and drove 2,800 miles – from Oregon all the way to Pennsylvania.

Nubz was the only dog in his litter to survive the puppy mill from which he was rescued. His paw loss was caused by his mother chewing off his rear paws, a reaction caused from the stress of the conditions and a difficulty with understanding what it meant to be a mom.

“Puppy mills typically have a lot of caged animals. They don’t have a lot of access to moving around,” Laura Magruder, Nubz’s veterinarian at Evergreen Veterinary Hospital in Salem, told KGW.com. “We don’t know if it was the extra stress of the puppy mill or maybe she just wasn’t ready to be a mom, but she ended up taking it out on her puppies, unfortunately.”

Nubz was very carefully attended to thanks to his rescuers, the veterinary staff involved, and the foster mom that cared for him until he was adopted. Nubz was finally ready to move on to the new chapter in his life with his new forever home.

Now at 10-months-old, Nubz is living a healthy life full of happiness! Havlinek is doing everything in his power to give him the best possible life – including providing pricy hydrotherapy and paying $3,000 for Nubz to get custom prosthetics.

While having a disabled dog can be an expense, it is worth every penny. Havlinek feels joy seeing Nubz running and playing the same way any other dog can. He hopes that he can train Nubz to become a therapy dog for wounded veterans as well, so his story can help others in need!

“Take him in for guys who’ve got amputations and stuff, and take him in to show you-you’re not alone,” Havlinek said.

He is one of the hundreds of thousands of pit bull mixes entered into shelters each year. For Koda, life was off to a rough start – until a special program changed things forever.

While Koda was waiting to be adopted at the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, New York, the Animal Farm Foundation noted that he would be a great candidate for the Assistance Dog Program. This program takes qualified pit bulls from shelters and gives them the necessary training to become service dogs.

“All dogs are individuals, and while some tend to prefer staying cozy on the couch all day as a family pet, others have the right characteristics to perform service work,” Bernice Clifford, director of behavior and training at AFF, told The Dodo. “In Koda’s case, he had a great personality, was very comfortable with being around other dogs and people and had the desire and energy to do the work.”

Koda began his life at a farm and enjoyed roaming around with the cows. Unfortunately, the landlord did not enjoy the animals mingling and demanded that Koda be rehomed. When a new home was found, animal control checked up on the new owners – and it turned out they had been convicted of animal cruelty in the past. Koda was taken out of the home and was placed in a shelter.

Koda spent a year training for basic obedience and understanding environments to be experienced with his handler (for instance, grocery stores, airports, plans, or public transportation). He learned about how to respond to seizures, how to pick up dropped items, and how to call for help when needed.

Once he completed his training, Koda was paired with a handler that matched him perfectly – Fiona Gilbert, and exercise physiologist from San Francisco, California.

As a sufferer of multiple sclerosis, or MS, Filber experiences a number of symptoms on a daily basis. When she saw a documentary about a woman with the same diagnosis utilizing a service dog, she felt inspired to try the same.

Gilbert applied for a service pit bull in 2014, and has waited three years to be paired – an average waiting period for a service dog, according to Gilbert.

“It was my husband who first said, ‘What you need is a pit bull service dog,’ and I remember saying, ‘Don’t be stupid, there’s no such thing,’” Gilbert said. “And here I am with an ultra-amazing pit bull service dog.”

“It’s not often that you see a movement therapist needing a service dog to help them move and do their job,” Gilbert expplained. “I travel a lot for work and my job is physically demanding.”

Gilbert works with patients suffering from neurological disorders, much like herself. Her job can leave her exhausted. With Koda, Gilbert is able to use less of her body strength to work, allowing her to better focus on the task at hand – helping her clients!

“Koda braces me when I do [flexibility training] work on my clients so I am not so tired at the end of the day,” Gilbert said. “I’m able to do things like make dinner and have a conversation with my husband without falling asleep on the couch or into my soup.”

Before Koda came into her life, daily tasks such as walking could be extremely difficult. “Walking is one of the trickiest [and most tiring] things to do when you have a neurological disorder,” she said. “With Koda, I can trust him to make sure that I am safe and walking well, so I don’t need as much energy to walk.”

The exhaustion Gilbert felt from her job caused difficulty managing her MS.

“When I get exhausted, my symptoms flare,” Gilbert said. “Travel became difficult. I look healthy, but I can’t form words, so I would appear to be drunk and sometimes denied boarding a plane. Having Koda means I am not as tired and my invisible disability becomes visible.”

While Koda is a hardworker, he also enjoys his free time. He loves basking in the sun…

Snuggling…

Playing with squeaky toys…

The relationship between Gilbert and Koda helps to tear down negative stereotypes about pit bulls.

“I’d never owned a pit bull before Koda, but I was familiar with their public image and thought it was unfair to sideline an entire breed,” Gilbert said. “Seeing us work, people have been learning about dogs as individuals.”

“Koda has had quite the roller coaster in life and so have I,” Gilbert said. “But being a pit bull or a person who has a diagnosis handed to them or a crappy history doesn’t define who they are. It is what they do with it, it is how we respond back to the world that defines us.”

Now, three years later, they are up to 23 dogs at home! Many people walk by homeless individuals every day and assume that their pet companions are mistreated or neglected. Such intense companionship is important during such hardship.
