Skye, a one-year-old Husky mix, was picked up on the streets of Palm Valley, Texas. Animal Control Officers saw this stray girl in pretty bad shape. She had a severe case of mange and had lost fur as a result of it. On top of that, she had a tick-borne disease and was extremely malnourished.
Bad News for Skye
The officers took the poor pup to the local shelter. Unfortunately, Skye had to be put on the euthanasia list immediately.
“The shelter is the highest kill shelter in the country,” Stacey Silverstein, cofounder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, told The Dodo. “The protocol at the shelter is that medical dogs get euthanized right away because they don’t have the means or the space or anything to treat them.”
Despite her fate, the shelter staff thought they would at least attempt to save this sweet girl. They contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC and explained Skye’s story and condition.
The rescue group said they would take her.
Silverstein explained to The Dodo, “We knew we had to pull her immediately because she’d die if we didn’t. So we said, ‘Yes.’”
Rescue Dogs Rock NYC responded quickly; they were able to get Skye out of the shelter that day. Afterward, she was taken to a vet to help treat her various issues. That evening, she went into boarding, awaiting a foster home.
A New Beginning
While Skye recovered from vet treatment, she stayed in a foster home in Texas. After a few weeks, she was moved to a new foster home in New York. Her new foster mom decided almost immediately that Skye was there to stay!
“She [the mom] has got little kids and little dogs, and she [Skye] just kind of fit in perfectly, like it was meant to be,” Silverstein said. “She’s an incredible dog.”
Over time, Skye transformed before her family’s eyes. Her hair grew back, she gained some weight, and boy, does she look happy!
Rescue Dogs Rock NYC was sure to share her beautiful transformation with their followers on Facebook.
