Like most stray animals, one Romanian pup went unseen and unloved by the world until a recent accident turned him from lost canine to helpful companion.

Stranded in the Mountains

Last week, a cyclist was biking through the mountains of western Romania when a crash interrupted his plans and resulted in a broken collarbone. He was unable to continue his ride and remained stuck on the trail as the chilly night air closed in around him. Luckily, he didn’t remain alone for long!

A Surprise for First Responders

Rescuers from the county of Caras Severin quickly realized that they weren’t the only ones rushing to aid the cyclist.

Source: Jandarmeria Caras Severin

“When the cyclist fell and remained laying on the road, a dog came from the woods and laid beside the victim as to warm him with its body,” one official reported to Romanian Insider.

“When we arrived, the dog didn’t leave his side and remained there until the ambulance arrived,” the official said.

Source: Jandarmeria Caras Severin

Although it’s not known whether the stray pup had always claimed the mountainside as home, or if his owners had recently abandoned him there, his compassion in a time of need demonstrated a significant lesson in humanity.

Two Rescues in One

Although it was the cyclist who had the physical immediate need, he wasn’t the only one to receive a saving grace as a result of the accident. As reported by The Dodo, first responders named the dog “Savior Dog” and provided him with a home in a temporary shelter. Word of his canine heroism quickly spread online, and within days, a family adopted him as one of their own.

Source: Jandarmeria Caras Severin

Kindness Rewarded

Officials cleverly pointed out the sweet irony in a seemingly unseen and unloved animal providing companionship to a helpless human.

“Man’s best friend gives a lesson on ‘humanity,’” they shared with Romanian Insider.

Source: Jandarmeria Caras Severin

A forever home and a lifetime of love – what a perfect reward for a well-deserving hero!

Francesca Carsen and Steve Rother run a ranch and love to rescue animals.

A Mischievous, Mini Horse

A woman reached out to them and inquired about them taking in a 2-year-old miniature horse. She explained that Spanky, the mini horse, had aggressive tendencies toward people and other animals.

Source: Instagram/dally_and_spanky

Sure enough, “We went to take a look and saw the little 2-year-old horse was making it known he was the boss of everyone,” Carsen told The Dodo. “So we agreed.”

Spanky put up quite a fight at his new home. He caused quite a bit of problems during his first few weeks on the ranch, but his new owners were persistent. Within a year’s work of training and tons of patience, Spanky was almost a completely different horse! Of course, he still had some disobedient tendencies and wasn’t keen on getting to know other animals.

Source: Instagram/dally_and_spanky

Enter: Dally

Meanwhile, Francesca and Steve adopted Dally. Dally was born to one of Francesca’s friends, and she was the unwanted runt of the litter. Naturally, Francesca took her in. Dally immediately loved Spanky. “At just 4 months old Dally would sit on the step stool and watch me work with Spanky,” Carsen told The Dodo.

Source: Instagram/dally_and_spanky

Spanky didn’t quite carry the same fascination with Dally. He was generally indifferent, but he did show some care for her. He was extremely cautious around her and watched where he stepped so as not to smush the tiny puppy.

A Courageous Pup

One day, Dally gathered up the courage and used the step stool to hop onto Spanky’s back.

“After about two months, she hopped up onto Spanky’s back from the step stool … and that day they became inseparable,” Carsen said. “We noticed the next day she was more excited than she had ever been. She loves riding her pony and feels pretty important. She no longer needs the step stool, she jumps on Spanky’s back from the ground.”

Source: Instagram/dally_and_spanky

Whatever the reason, this valiant act stirred a quick friendship between the two.

The Dynamic Duo

The duo are inseparable; they love to hang out, nap together, and of course, ride together with Dally lounging on Spanky’s back! The story of this amazing friendship spread but went crazy when their mother released a book titled The Great Adventures of Dally and Spanky. The fun-loving duo also perform at events and shows.

It’s wonderful that two unwanted rescue animals were able to find each other. Their special bond is inspiring to many.

Check out Dally & Spanky’s Instagram account and share with friends to spread the love!

Nika Todua and Irina Liklikadze were walking along a busy street in Rustavi, a city in the eastern European country, Georgia.

Suddenly, they noticed a very small animal curled up in the road. They approached the animal and realized it was a small puppy. They assumed the puppy was dead but touched her and felt her little, shallow breaths. Nika and Irina volunteer with a rescue group called Animal Friends and knew just what to do.

Source: Animal Friends

The Fragile Puppy is Saved

Of course, they wouldn’t leave her to get hit by a car, so they scooped the poor thing up.

“It was shocking because she was so feeble and doomed to death,” Nika told The Dodo. “She was hungry, thirsty and had a lot of worms … and she was very docile.”

Source: Animal Friends

The puppy appeared to be just 1 month old. There was no way she could survive on her own. Where was her mother?

The pup’s amazing rescuers asked around and learned more of the puppy’s sad story.

Source: Animal Friends

“We were told that the mother of this little puppy was hit by a car,” Nika explained to The Dodo. “We don’t know what happened to her brothers and sisters.”

E.T. is Coming Home

The women decided to take her home to treat her parasites and fatten her up as she only weighed half a pound. Because she was so small and frail, the pup didn’t look like a puppy at all. Her rescuers agreed that she looked like an alien, so they named her E.T.

Day by day, E.T. grew healthier. Within nine months, she had grown four times her size and weight!

Atlanta Humane Society rescue workers were anonymously notified of an animal hoarding and possible puppy mill situation. When they arrived at the Georgia home in question, they were horrified.

The Mangey Boston Terrier

Almost 80 dogs were trapped in a chicken wire cage. Many had matted coats while others had no fur at all. They laid on the hard, dirt ground or on top of broken pieces of plastic dog houses.

Source: Instagram/call_me_scabigail

Among the diverse group of adorable, loving pups, a young, hairless Boston Terrier stood out. She was cocking her head to the side, curious about her rescuers.

Thankfully, the hoarders released all of the dogs to the Atlanta Humane Society. Although many were put up for adoption the next day, many still needed medical attention. Among those in need of help was the adorable little Boston Terrier. The shelter named the head-tilting, cutie Abigail.

Abigail had a severe case of Demodex Mange, a contagious condition where tiny mites burrow into the dog’s skin. The mange had caused poor Abigail to lose all her fur. On top of that, she was itching nonstop, resulting in scabs all over her body.

Source: Instagram/call_me_scabigail

In Search of Insta-fame

Amanda Harris, the Marketing Manager for the Atlanta Humane Society, spotted poor Abigail and knew she had to foster her.

Harris brought her new foster home and immediately noticed how photogenic and goofy Abigail was. She decided to set up an Instagram account just for Abigail. Abigail’s Instagram account, call_me_scabigail, aimed to spread awareness about her condition and her journey to becoming a happy, healthy pup.

Harris loaded the account with delightful photos and videos plus a silly bio that reads “On a mission to grow all of my hairs back. Every. Single. One.” All this was in hopes of making Abigail, or Scabigail (her new nickname), an Instagram famous shelter dog.

Source: Instagram/call_me_scabigail

Christina Hill, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Atlanta Humane Society told the Dodo, “We were really excited by the community’s support and rallying behind her, asking how she was doing. It started talks about the case and animal welfare in a really interesting way, because everybody sees the happy ending stories or the really sad stories, but they don’t see the process that happens to the animal in between.”

“That was That”

As the shelter had hoped, Abigail’s Instagram following grew and grew. Among her many followers was Alton Brown, the chef and Food Network host, and his fiancée, Elizabeth Ingram, an Atlanta-based interior designer.

Alton tells Atlanta Magazine in an email, “I can’t remember if I saw Scabigail first or if Elizabeth did. We follow a lot of rescue organizations, so one of us just saw her [scroll past] and showed it to the other, and then we started following her, and then realized she was available for adoption. That was that.”

Alton had posted on Abigail’s Instagram: ‘Is she up for adoption? Is this dog looking for a home?’

Source: Instagram/call_me_scabigail

Hill explained, “He was joking about letting her come to the studio and eat scraps off the floor of the test kitchen, and we thought, ‘This is perfect for her.’ This dog has had such a rough time, and for her to get the opportunity to have such a wonderful life and to be loved the way she should be loved — it’s heartwarming.”

The rest is history, as they say. Abigail was adopted by Alton and Elizabeth and is living a well-deserved, happy life with her parents and dog and cat siblings.

Alton tells Atlanta Magazine, “The funky little mutt is actually 100 percent Boston Terrier and all personality. She walks in and owns whatever room she’s in, and that’s a pretty big deal considering she’s only 9 1/2 pounds and has no hair.”

Source: Instagram/call_me_scabigail

Alton goes on to say, “There so many animals out there who need loving homes. I can’t even think of adopting anything but a rescue at this point.”

Thankfully, Abigail’s new family has promised to continue updating her Instagram account. So be sure to follow along and share!

As Holly and her family were enjoying the lake, Holly’s dog same hilariously panicked in the water… and Holly’s sister was the victim.

“My dad threw his ball into the water for him to get, which he did until he spotted my sister and decided to swim over to her instead.

I don’t know if he was trying to save her or save himself, but that’s when he put my sister under for a good five seconds before my dad came to the rescue!” Holly shared with Bored Panda.

“His name is Sam and he will be 2 years old in September. We decided to take him to the lake with us that day, and since he’s only gone swimming a few times and it was a larger body of water we brought along his doggie life jacket just to be safe!” Holly shared.

The family successfully managed to get Sam and Holly’s sister, Ariana, back onto their boat and returned Sam’s ball to him. Ariana was left unscathed, with only a few scratches from the ordeal.

The Tulsa Drillers, the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate, held a Bark in the Park night. Fans brought their pups to the game decked out in their own dog jerseys, ready for some baseball fun!

In between innings, some dogs were welcomed onto the field to watch the players warm up.

Source: TWITTER: @HAROLDRKUNTZ3

Well, one German Shepherd knows when he sees a good game of fetch! Once the doggo saw that the humans were playing fetch without him he decided to jump right in for some fun!

In a flash, he slipped through his owner’s hands and bounded after a pitch.

Source: TWITTER: @HAROLDRKUNTZ3

But wait… there’s more! Another ball is thrown to the shortstop, and the energetic pup cannot resist. He chases after that one, too, and to his satisfaction, snatches it up.

Like a good pup, he brings the retrieved ball back to the shortstop and is given a nice ‘good dog’ pat.

Source: TWITTER: @HAROLDRKUNTZ3

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The dog is returned to his owner, but not without a fight; he twists and leaps after all the balls being thrown. Even while on a leash, he manages to grab another loose ball.

Finally, he is given a baseball of his own!

Source: TWITTER: @HAROLDRKUNTZ3

Meanwhile, the crowd goes wild, watching this hilarious pup’s antics! No one wanted to miss this opportunistic dog in action.

Sam Coleman-Dancer, a 19-year-old seasonal employee of ACE Hardware in Cleveland, Mississippi, approached a customer shopping in the store, just as he would any other day. The customer, Martin Lowe was looking for one thing and one thing only: a shovel.

Sam wondered, Why is this elderly man buying a shovel? It’s a hot day out.

When Sam asked the gentleman about the shovel, Martin told Sam about his dog, Bo.

Martin explained that Bo, his German Shepherd, had just passed away. Martin wanted a proper burial for his loving companion of 12 years.

Source: Wikimedia

In an interview with The Dodo, Sam remembered, “He told me about the times they spent together, walking and playing fetch.

He said his dog had always been there for him. They were very connected.

He was very emotional, and it touched me.”

Above and Beyond Customer Service

Sam told Martin that he would like to come to his house after work to help him bury his dog.

Sam explained, “His eyes opened wide. It was amazing.”

He said, “I can’t let you do that. Are you sure?”

I said, “I’m positive. As soon as I’m off work, I’ll head right over.”

Sam knew that this was an important thing to do. What if it were his own grandfather who needed help?

As promised, Sam headed over to Martin’s house after work. Martin offered to pay Sam for his help, but Sam declined. Instead, he asked Martin for a simple “payment”: a photo of the two of them together.

https://www.facebook.com/clevelandsacehardware8200/photos/a.143339642832124.1073741828.143281322837956/214530965712991/?type=3&theater

The truth is, Sam gained so much more than a photograph. He built a friendship and bond with Martin through the memory and love of Bo.

Sam even received some inspiring advice. “He [Martin] told me that great things come to you at unexpected times and we both smiled. Definitely, something we will both remember,” Sam told WLBT.

After 13 years of companionship, Sadie’s human best friend passed away suddenly from a heart attack. Jeremy May, President of the Elements Cremation, Pre-Planning and Burial in British Columbia, Canada kindly let Sadie say goodbye one last time at her guardians funeral.

For 13 years, Sadie had been at the side of her guardian. She was at their side when they suddenly passed away from a heart attack, leaving Sadie understandably heartbroken. “After the paramedics came and couldn’t revive him, Sadie laid beside him and repeated put her head on and under his hand,” May told The Dodo.

During the ten days of planning the funeral, Sadie was inconsolable. “During that time Sadie would not eat, would not sleep by herself and spent days waiting by the window and door waiting for his return,” May shared with the Dodo.

Thanks to the kindness of the funeral home, Sadie was able to say goodbye.

In the heartbreaking scene, the deceased widow brought Sadie to the funeral service. May saw how upset Sadie was and knew then he would treat the dog just like any other family member.

“The dog was as important as a spouse and child, so it was important that we allowed it to happen. As Sadie approached the casket you could both feel and hear the emotion in the room from the guests. Not a dry eye in the room. It was an emotional and hair-raising moment,” May told The Dodo.

Now having said a proper goodbye, when Sadie got home from the funeral service later that day, she ate two full meals. Finally, she found some peace with her guardian suddenly passing.

Even though there is no denying that dogs grieve, just like humans do, some funeral homes forbid animals from coming inside to say their final goodbyes. “If anybody ever doubts the level of understanding and emotional capacity our dogs have, this experience should lay that to rest. Our pets need closure as well. They feel loss and experience grief,” May shared with The Dodo.

Please help us spread awareness of how dogs are just as deserving to be allowed in funeral homes by sharing this tender story with your friends and family!

A beagle named Gregory was recently found running the streets in Obetz, Ohio and once brought to the Franklin County Shelter and Adoption Center, he was found to be in perfect health. There was just one slight problem: during his health and behavior assessment, his heartworm test came back positive.

Heartbreakingly, while the two-year-old pup was full of energy, due to the $400 medical treatment needed for his heartworm, he was listed as “rescue only.” In other words, if Gregory wasn’t pulled from the shelter by May 3rd, he would be euthanized.

Thankfully, Gregory’s story has a happy ending. Schenley Hutson Kirk and her husband are the founders of Hound Rescue and Sanctuary and saved Gregory from the euthanasia list.

“My husband took the day off work to drive to the shelter, while I stayed home to take care of the other rescue dogs. On the way back home, he decided he was going to take a couple selfies of our new rescue, which I got after him a little bit for since he’s not supposed to take pictures while driving — but considering the photos he captured I couldn’t complain too much,” Kirk told The Dodo.

Gregory was thrilled during his two-hour-long “freedom ride” to Hound Rescue and Sanctuary. Even though he was tethered to the backseat for safety, Gregory still found a way to say “thanks” to his rescuers.

“[Joe] sent me three photos, and in the last one, little Gregory had leaned his head over, as if to say, ‘You saved my life. I knew I was going to die at that shelter, but you saved me today. And just the look in his eyes — the thankfulness, the appreciation and the love of this little dog — it’s as if he knows his life has been saved,” Kirk told The Dodo.

Now at Hound Rescue and Sanctuary, Gregory is finishing his month-long antibiotic treatment and will soon begin his heartworm treatment. Kirk shares that he already appears to be house-trained and is very well-behaved. And Gregory hasn’t forgotten the people who rescued him and continues to show his appreciation. “He’s very laid-back, very happy-go-lucky, and his favorite thing to do is get lots of love from his people,” Kirk added.

While hounds and beagles often get boxed in as only being hunting dogs, Kirk and Joe are determined to make sure that dogs who don’t want to hunt find forever homes. “From the time I was young, I’ve known quite a few people who hunted, and over the years I saw the type of life that the hounds live. A lot of them live outside, tied to a tree with a doghouse. The only thing they have in their life is that small area, and the time during hunting season is the only activity and type of affection that they get, which is very minimal from the hunters,” Kirk told The Dodo.

The rescue of Gregory reaffirms Kirk and Joe’s life mission!
