Francesca Carsen and Steve Rother run a ranch and love to rescue animals.
A Mischievous, Mini Horse
A woman reached out to them and inquired about them taking in a 2-year-old miniature horse. She explained that Spanky, the mini horse, had aggressive tendencies toward people and other animals.
Sure enough, “We went to take a look and saw the little 2-year-old horse was making it known he was the boss of everyone,” Carsen told The Dodo. “So we agreed.”
Spanky put up quite a fight at his new home. He caused quite a bit of problems during his first few weeks on the ranch, but his new owners were persistent. Within a year’s work of training and tons of patience, Spanky was almost a completely different horse! Of course, he still had some disobedient tendencies and wasn’t keen on getting to know other animals.
Enter: Dally
Meanwhile, Francesca and Steve adopted Dally. Dally was born to one of Francesca’s friends, and she was the unwanted runt of the litter. Naturally, Francesca took her in. Dally immediately loved Spanky. “At just 4 months old Dally would sit on the step stool and watch me work with Spanky,” Carsen told The Dodo.
Spanky didn’t quite carry the same fascination with Dally. He was generally indifferent, but he did show some care for her. He was extremely cautious around her and watched where he stepped so as not to smush the tiny puppy.
A Courageous Pup
One day, Dally gathered up the courage and used the step stool to hop onto Spanky’s back.
“After about two months, she hopped up onto Spanky’s back from the step stool … and that day they became inseparable,” Carsen said. “We noticed the next day she was more excited than she had ever been. She loves riding her pony and feels pretty important. She no longer needs the step stool, she jumps on Spanky’s back from the ground.”
Whatever the reason, this valiant act stirred a quick friendship between the two.
The Dynamic Duo
The duo are inseparable; they love to hang out, nap together, and of course, ride together with Dally lounging on Spanky’s back! The story of this amazing friendship spread but went crazy when their mother released a book titled The Great Adventures of Dally and Spanky. The fun-loving duo also perform at events and shows.
It’s wonderful that two unwanted rescue animals were able to find each other. Their special bond is inspiring to many.
