Over the course of the 13 years Charlie Weiss has lived in his home in Winterville, North Carolina, he rarely paid much attention to any of his neighbors. Of course, he was friendly and casual, but he never spent much time with them.

A New Neighbor

A year ago, a new woman moved in next door. Weiss was friendly but imagined, just as his previous relationships with his neighbors, that would be the gist of it.

Source: Charlie Weiss

One day, Weiss felt like he was being watched. He glanced around his yard but did not see anyone.

At one point, he looked down to find a furry snout and eyeball sticking out underneath his fence. His new neighbor’s German Shepherd mix was watching him.

Source: Charlie Weiss

Over time, the pup became an expected visitor. Whenever Weiss spent time on his porch, he would glance over to that same spot, and sure enough, the pup would be there, watching him. It was the norm.

Wait, What’s That?

One day, Weiss noticed that his neighbor had adopted a second dog. He was an adorable Pitbull mix but was a tad shy and needed to warm up to Weiss.

Weiss explained to The Dodo, “My deck looks over the fence, and when he first noticed me he would run up to the fence and bark at me. I figured he was probably just a little stressed from being in a new environment.”

Source: Charlie Weiss

Weiss greeted the new pup with friendly ‘hello’s and lo and behold, over time, the second dog began spying through the fence, too!

The nosy duo would check on Weiss often, listening for the sound of his front door opening.

“The German Shepherd loves affection. She always lays by the fence, sticks her snout under it and whimpers until I pet her,” Weiss told The Dodo. “The Pit usually doesn’t want to be pet, but he’s pretty funny because he’ll lick the fence and look at me through it the whole time I’m there.”

And Then There Were Three

To throw Weiss for another loop, one day, when he walked out into the yard, he spotted a new pup under the fence. This time, he saw the whole head and beady eyes of his visitor, an adorable black and white puppy.

Source: Charlie Weiss

It seemed that the puppy was eager to enter Weiss’ yard and was determined to make the hole under the fence bigger and bigger. The other two spies – of course – do not object to this great plan.

“They haven’t made it into my yard yet, but the puppy really tried,” Weiss said. “It was pretty comical to watch. He was on a mission to get into my yard, but he just couldn’t squeeze through.”

Source: Charlie Weiss

Weiss has become accustomed to his very regular (and obvious) spies. He has snapped some pretty adorable pictures of their antics.

“I joke with a friend that one day I’m gonna show my neighbor those pictures and tell her, ‘Look, you had a good run, but they’ve made their decision. They’re mine now.’” Weiss goes on, “A lot of times I don’t even realize they’re there. I just turn around and there’s a snout sticking out from under the fence.”

Dogs are incredibly smart and loving creatures. We sure love to hear stories like this. Make sure to pass along to your loved ones to brighten their day!

Carol Jordan adopted Bear and Bull, two black Lab mixes, about six years ago. The brothers sure enjoy causing trouble. Some of their favorite naughty activities include (but are not limited to): pulling down drain pipes, chewing up doorjambs, digging holes in the yard, and destroying a total of three different lawn mowers.

Of course, Carol scolds them for their behavior but quickly forgives them for all the havoc they cause.

Carol told The Dodo, “They just can’t help themselves. We never catch them in the act, we just see the destruction afterward.”

Source: Carol Jordan

Special Delivery

Bear and Bull also like to share their antics with the world.

When a FedEx driver pulled up to drop off a package, Bear and Bull couldn’t resist hopping into the truck.

In an interview with The Dodo, Carol explained, “Our FedEx delivery man told us that he came up to deliver and he left his door open. The boys jumped in and one sat ready to drive and the other ready to be a passenger in the front seat. He kept throwing dog biscuits trying to get them to come out — but they wouldn’t.”

The next time a mail courier visited, the boys took their joke a little too far. When the postal woman returned to her truck, she found the two dogs scarfing down her lunch. Instead of getting angry with the mischievous pair, she left a quick note for Carol, explaining what happened and warning her.

Source: Carol Jordan

The note said: “Hey! I drove up to deliver a package and both of the dogs crawled in my truck. They got into my lunch and ate an egg and some carrots and pumpkin seeds. I don’t know if that will upset their tummies, just FYI!”

Carol was surprised and touched by the gesture.

“It was so nice of her to leave us a note of concern for the dogs that we decided to get her a gift card from the ‘boys’ to make up for them eating her lunch,” Carol said. “I brought the note and card to the post office the following week so they could give it to the carrier.

Source: Carol Jordan

The front of the note read: Thank You + We Are Sorry (with the ‘We Are Sorry’ written in).
The inside of the note went on to say: “Sorry we ate your lunch. Thank you for sharing! Bull & Bear Jordan P.S. Our humans said, ‘Thank you’ for leaving a note. We didn’t like the note. We got in trouble.”

Source: Carol Jordan

In their apology, Bear and Bull also included a gift card to Subway as a repayment for consuming the mail lady’s prepared lunch.

No Regrets

The word about Bear and Bull has spread and local mail courier services have started to close their truck doors when delivering packages. Thankfully, everyone knows Bear and Bull’s antics are just fun and games. We’re pretty sure that mail couriers experience far worse with other dogs on their routes.

Carol believes the brothers “don’t really regret anything they do! They will look guilty for a while, but then it is all fun and games with them again.”

Be sure to share Bear and Bull’s story with friends and family to give them a good laugh!

Poncho, a police dog of the Municipal Police of Madrid, sprints to the officer’s rescue, sporting a special harness with a flashing emergency light on his back.

Poncho hops up and down on the officer’s chest repeatedly, stopping only to place his ear by the cop’s neck and mouth to listen for breathing. After only a moment of this, the crowd goes wild, giggling and cheering Poncho on.

Poncho continues his valiant efforts until the officer stands up. The officer praises Poncho’s great work with a treat.

Four Paws Up

The Municipal Police of Madrid shared a video of Poncho’s spectacular work in a tweet, claiming that Poncho “did not hesitate for an instant.” Of course, this impressive (and adorable) video has gone viral, racking up shares and likes around the world.

Have you ever entered a Target store with just a few things on your list only to leave with 50 things?

You are not alone! This pup loves shopping there too!

Zira, the half Corgi, was taken to Target the other day, and her owner, Jesse, shared pictures of the trip with Twitter.

Source: — jesse (@virgoprincxss)/ Twitter

Needless to say, the photos are adorable; Zira is clearly smiling and enjoying herself.

Jesse told Bored Panda, “This was her second trip, although her first one she just slept the entire time.

She reminded us so much of Rose from Titanic, the way she leaned against the front of the cart, looking out into the world of Target for the first time! We could tell she loved it so much.

On top of her magical shopping trip, Zira also got to meet some other shoppers and get pets galore.

“While we were turning a corner, this woman shopping saw her and freaked out,” Jesse said.

“She couldn’t stop going on and on about how cute Zira was. Zira just started licking her, and the woman loved it.

She even picked Zira up and let her kiss her face!”

An Internet Sensation

As you can imagine, Zira’s photos went viral on Twitter. Her photos inspired others to share their pets’ Target trip photos. It turns out there are quite a few!

Source: BabsSCL/Twitter

Source: grazkatz/Twitter

Source: ninamarie_4/Twitter

Of course, the internet had some opinions on the matter, questioning how sanitary it is to bring a pup into Target.

Internet drama aside, we think Zira is pretty cute and are so glad her mommy decided to share her shopping trip with us!

Be sure to pass along to help brighten someone’s day!

Whether you just adopted a four-legged best friend or you are a seasoned dog guardian, one thing is certain: you always want what’s best for your dog.

Chances are, these are 8 things your dog wants you to know about – even if you don’t speak fido’s language!

1. “Let’s Go For a Walk”

Exercise is good for you and your dog!

The amount of exercise your dog needs on the regular basis depends on their age, breed, and health.

If you have a puppy, most dog owners know that they need exercise and play time at the park. But did you know that senior dogs need exercise too? While a senior dog may not be able to go for a five-mile walk with you, they still need physical and mental stimulation such as learning new tricks or doing dog agility training.

Exercise is one of the most important factors to avoid obesity in dogs. Make sure you are giving your dog daily exercise. A 30-minute walk, twice a day is ideal.

2. “Ouch! Don’t Pull On My Leash!”

Please never pull or yank on your dog’s leash!

For smaller dogs especially, you could hurt their fragile necks. If you are still using a leash connected to your dog’s throat collar, consider opting for a body harness that will make walks much easier and comfortable for both you and your pup.

A full body harness with the right leash will help to avoid skeletal injuries.

Often times, these injuries don’t show up until your pooch is much older and you’ll wish you never yanked on them!

3. “Don’t Yell at Me, I Don’t Understand!”

We’ve all been there: “I can’t believe you pooped on the floor!”

While you may be mad that your dog destroyed the carpet, dogs are just like small children and can’t understand why you are upset with them.

Instead, dogs pick up on the TONE of your voice. And they also can’t make the correlation as to why you are yelling at them.

If it looks like a toy and smells like a toy, then it’s a toy in your dog’s mind.

Many dog lovers are familiar with the “guilty” look that a dog gives, such as when they avoid eye contact and hide from you, but in reality, fido is trying to appease you with their body language.

“People anthropomorphize dogs quite a bit. We give them so much credit for being masterminds, but fail to recognize if the dog is so smart and understands they’re going to get into trouble for a behavior, why would they do it again and again?

To make their human, the people they love most, super mad for fun? That makes no sense,” said Kris Crestejo, a certified dog behavior consultant to PawCulture.

Next time your dog misbehaves, try using positive reinforcement techniques such as using praise and food for good behavior.

4. “Pet me more please!”

Some dogs don’t like cuddles and pets and can exhibit signs of stress, such as lip-licking, turning away, and moving away from you when you stop. If your pup likes to be pet, massaged, and/or cuddled, give them what they want!

Not only will your dog enjoy the attention, spending time with your dog is known to reduce stress in people.

Cuddle bug or not, don’t let young children hug dogs. If the dog suddenly becomes stressed, the child’s face is directly in the dog’s bite zone. On a similarly important note, if you are out on a walk and see a dog, always ask if you can pet the other person’s pup!

5. “Don’t Leave Me Outside in the Summer Heat”

Summertime can certainly be fun, but the soaring temps can also be dangerous and sometimes even fatal for our furry friends.

Never leave your dog alone in a car during the summer, even just for five minutes.

As the Humane Society of the United States notes, on an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees in just ten minutes.

It’s also important to keep in mind humidity.

“Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves, and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly,” said Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

During the summer months, you’ll want to limit your exercise time outside. Always carry fresh water with you when you are with your dog and don’t let them walk on the hot asphalt, walk on the grass instead. Add some refreshing ice to their water bowl and/or make some doggy popsicles to help your canine BFF cool down!

6. “I Want to Be Comfortable, Too”

Dogs truly don’t ask for much: food, clean water, toys… and a cozy bed!

Investing in a warm, plush bed (or maybe two) for your house will let your dog know they are part of the family.

Better yet: you can let your dog come up on the furniture with you for cuddle sessions while watching TV… but if you don’t like having companion animals on your furniture, at the very least offer them their own bed!

7. “Play With Me”

When you’re away at work, it’s important to give your pup something to do so that they don’t get lonely or bored.

From plush toys, Kong treats, and dog puzzles, toys make for excellent mental health stimulation.

Take your dog to your local pet store and let them choose a toy that they like best. Not only will your dog get a new toy to play with, but a trip to the pet store together makes for great bonding time!

When you are home, spend 20 minutes a day or more playing fetch (or whatever your dog’s favorite game is) to give them the mental and physical stimulation they need.

A well-engaged pup is a happy pup!

8. “You Are My Entire World”

While you have friends, family, and work engagements, your dog only has YOU!

Your dog wants nothing more but to love you unconditionally and make you happy. It’s important to keep this in mind when caring for your dog or when making the decision to adopt a new family member.

Your dog puts you first, so you should put them first too!

Two years ago, when Gideon was just seven years old, he started the blog “I’ve Pet That Dog” where he recorded all of the dogs he met by the dog’s name and the day Gideon pet the pup. Now, just two years later, Gideon has started a Twitter account and his dog-loving adventures have become an Internet sensation seemingly overnight.

The “I’ve Pet That Dog” Twitter has racked up over 72,000 followers since April of 2018 when the account was first created. The idea is simple: Gideon loves to pet dogs and shares photos of him petting dogs along with some noteworthy characteristics of the dog. As you can imagine, dog lovers worldwide are enjoying following Gideon’s furry escapades.

I pet Stella. She is a 16 month old poodle and a show dog. She follows all sorts of commands, like shake, sit and stay. She can even bring back pheasants!

When asked by Vice why he started documenting all of the dogs he pets, Gideon shared his genuine answer, “Well, there’s a couple of reasons. One, I LOVEEE dogs. Two, I wanted to see how many dogs I could get. And three, I wanted to show the public about all of the dogs. I wanted to show everybody all of the dogs in the world. I don’t think I will ever do that, though.”

Gideon has already pet over 340 dogs (living the dream!) and shared with Vice that his favorite pup was Clementine. We got Clementine recently—she was our 300th dog. Yeah, she was all cuddly, she loved jumping around. She was soooo adorable,” Gideon said.

If you’re wondering how Gideon has pet hundreds of dogs…the answer is simple: he just asks! Gideon said that, “…we drive around in a car and then when we see a dog we park. Then we get out and say, “Can I pet your dog?” Yep, it really is that easy!

Gideon mainly sticks to canines, but he has pet a chicken and two goats on his adventures. We hope the dogs don’t get jealous!

I pet Keisha and Zorro. They are Siberian huskies. They only want to eat human food and try their best to get some. They love to swim and play all day. pic.twitter.com/yduZkLwryd

As any dog admirer will tell you, when you see a dog you MUST pet them and Gideon has taken this unwritten law to heart. He said that he loves dogs because they are each different, “Their fur is different colors. Some of them are taller, some are smaller, some don’t like playing with toys, some love playing with toys. It’s all because they’re basically different.”

Braman, a Refugio rancher, and businessman has long trained coonhounds to hunt animals such as bobcats, mountain lions, and coyotes. Now, Braman is using his expertise to train dogs to hunt criminal rhino poachers.

Braman has teamed up with South African conservation alliance and trainer Esequiel “Zeke” Ortiz in an effort to stop rhino poaching and to help bring back the rhino population, which is near the brink of extinction.

source: Angela Piazza | apiazza@vicad.com

Ivan Carter, the founder of the Ivan Carter Wildlife Conservation Alliance, has long known of Braman and his work for several years and applauds his efforts given the dire state of rhino poaching. “With rhino horn becoming the most valuable commodity on Earth and rhinos having been poached to the brink of extinction, this is a topic of much conversation,” Carter stated in an email.

source: Angela Piazza | apiazza@vicad.com

The horn of a white rhino sells for up to $3,000 a pound, according to a 2016 investigative report by National Geographic. Rhino horns are made up of keratin, the same protein found in human nails and hair, and is used for medicine.

Carter reached out to Braman for his dog-training expertise after witnessing rhinos left mutilated for their horns. “The ability for free-running dogs to track a poacher (whose scent is) that many hours old is a capacity we have never done before — this truly is the answer, and the fact that these dogs have been trained not only to track man but to actually (allow officials to) arrest a person makes them a unique tool that I think has the chance of changing the entire poaching landscape,” Carter said.

source: Angela Piazza | apiazza@vicad.com

Ortiz and Braman train the dogs day and night for any possibility they may encounter. The dogs are able to track a human scent several hours old and miles out. “Animals are easier because they have habits and patterns. But people are unpredictable. You don’t know what a person will do,” Braman said.

source: Angela Piazza | apiazza@vicad.com

Braman and Ortiz have one ultimate goal: to deter poachers with the hounds and save more rhinos life. The hounds are expected to fly to South Africa this summer to begin their mission.

“The way it’s going now, in a couple of generations, people will not be able to see a real rhino. If there’s something I can — or anyone else — can do, we should do it,” Braman said.

If you’d like to help stop rhino poaching, please never support the cruel industry by purchasing poached items and support bans on rhino horn sales in your city. As animal advocates, it’s up to us to raise awareness to friends, family, and community members about vicious rhino horn poaching!

Source: Hailee Graham//Facebook

Soon after Tate moved in with her new family, the next door neighbor also adopted a puppy, named Vernon. The tall backyard fence did nothing to stop Tate and Vernon from falling in puppy love. Hailee would often come outside and catch the two digging a tunnel to each other. “We couldn’t get them to stop. We couldn’t keep them apart. They would just keep digging holes to each other,” Hailee told The Dodo. Given the undeniable connection, the neighbors knew they had to do something. So they made a custom doggie door in the fence!

The family constructed a custom-built doggie-door in the fence, allowing Tate and Vernon to visit each other whenever they’d like. As you can imagine, since the doggie-door has been built, Tate and Vernon have been inseparable. “They love being together!
It might not be feasible for everyone to have a doggie-door connected with their neighbor, but Hailee hopes Tate and Vernon’s sweet story helps other dog lovers create a more welcoming environment in their yard. “I hope that it encourages people to be more friendly with their neighbors, and encourage a sense of community.
Knowing that there are kind-hearted people that accommodate their dogs restores our faith in humanity. If Tate and Vernon’s guardians’ gesture of building a doggie door brings a smile to your face, share this article with the dog lovers in your life!

Found as a stray in October 2017, Millie the dog was burdened with a matted coat. Her fur weighed her down so much, she found it difficult to walk and her skin was constantly tugged at.

Patricia Vazquez is a shelter volunteer and a board member that noticed Millie and knew she had to help.

“She was in an extreme amount of pain but was so grateful,” Vazquez told The Dodo. “I could tell from the first time I met her that she was the most lovely dog.

At 3-years-old, Millie was finally without her matted fur. Without the extra fluff, it was clear Millie had been deprived of food for a while. She had injuries on her legs, likely caused by the knotted fur pulling at her skin.

Within days of coming home with Vazquez, Millie became a new dog. She could walk without feeling weighed down, and she was growing stronger by the day.

Of course, Millie also loved having a caring family.

“Everywhere I go, she follows me,” Vazquez said.

Image Credit: Patricia VazquezVazquez has a small animal rescue about three miles from her home. Millie always joins in head there to help care for neglected animals–from bunnies to goats to dogs and more.

While Millie is a rather tiny dog, she doesn’t let that stop her from making new friends at the Finca Nati Animal Sanctuary.

“All of the animals just love Millie,” Vazquez said. “She loves spending time at the sanctuary.”

One of Millie’s favorite activities? Cruising around in the golf cart with Maggie, her mastiff sister.

“Going on golf cart rides is one of her favorite things,” Vazquez said.

“She has so much fun. I show people the photos of her from before and they can’t believe it’s her. She loves life now.”
