“We were contacted about the five puppies in distress on a private property 45 minutes west of Edmonton. All five puppies [were] severely emaciated and dehydrated,” Tessa Lee told The Dodo.

Lee quickly made her way over and was granted access to the property near the Alberta Beach. She was only authorized to gather the five puppies, despite there being other animals seen on the property.

The five puppies were frozen, and very close to death in the cold. Lee drove the puppies to her home, but could not be certain they would survive.

Lee was quick on her feet, thinking carefully of all she could do to help the poor dogs.

“I assessed their hydration levels, and put them on heat packs while administering fluids subcutaneously,” Lee said. “We relied on maple syrup to boost glucose levels and slowly began administering recovery wet dog food every two hours via feeding syringes.”

Through her holiday, Lee brought the litter of puppies back to health as best she could. Fortunately, Lee’s family understood her caring for the dogs. They have come to expect spur of the moment rescues after seeing Lee and her friends help animals in need at the volunteer-run rescue.

“Our families have come to expect some special animal guests joining us for Christmas dinner, whether it is a litter of kittens, puppies or even a ‘bottle baby’ lamb,” Lee explained. “We find that this time of year many people are traveling to be with family and therefore more animals in distress are noticed and reported. Our phones are definitely never off during the Christmas season.”

As Christmas Eve came about, the bottle-feeding and warmth seemed to do justice for all of the puppies – except one. While her brothers and sisters were recovering, this little puppy was struggling to even hold herself up.

Because of her red fur, Lee called the puppy Ruby. For Ruby, the next day could be the difference between life and death.

She is holding on and beginning to perk up,” Lee posted on WHARF’s Facebook page December 24. “Keep her in your thoughts and we will update everyone on her after the holidays.”

With great luck, Christmas brought a miracle. Ruby made it through the night and was finally on her feet.

“Merry Christmas everyone!! We have movement,” Lee wrote on Facebook. “This puppy didn’t have the strength to lift her body up yesterday. She is drinking water and eating on her own now.”

Support came from all corners of the web after Lee’s post. People even offered to take Ruby in!

. “At this point, Ruby’s condition is touch and go, and she is under 24/7 monitoring with us,” Lee explained. “The other four seem to be holding fast, we will be keeping everyone updated on Ruby’s condition as time goes on.”

While helping these puppies has been no simple task, Lee is more than happy to do it.

“Special cases such as these just require a huge dedication of time and effort, whether that’s waking up every two hours to feed them or monitoring alertness throughout the night,” Lee added. “Every animal deserves to be cared for and over the last decade we have done everything in our power to provide that to every animal that comes through our rescue.”

If progress continues as it has, Ruby’s siblings should be ready for adoption by some time in February!

For those interested in adopting a pet, Lee has some careful words of advice.“We urge people that are considering bringing an animal into their families to ensure that they are able to afford to spay/neuter their animal so situations like this no longer happen.”

When Danielle Grubisic and her family lost their 19-year-old cat two years ago, it was a tragedy. For Danielle’s younger sister, Peyton, this loss hit especially hard.

“My sister had been heartbroken ever since and been begging my dad to get another cat,” Danielle told The Dodo.

As Peyton begged, it seemed to make no difference. She decided a new approach was needed.

Tha plan? Guilt!

Instead of focusing on the joy she would feel with a new cat, Peyton opted to highlight the good adopting a shelter cat can be.

Peyton created a  “wall of sorrow”. The wall contains notes all working to get her dad’s attention and tug at his emotions.

“She loves animals,” Danielle said. “And she’s a very persuasive little girl!”

While Peyton’s dad wasn’t sure if the family was ready for another pet, his daughter’s notes convinced him that may not be the case.

“He eventually caved and they rescued a cat from a local shelter,” Danielle said. “The cat was actually one of the oldest residents there, being almost 2 years old.”

And just like that, Mittens, their new cat, had a home of her own!

While dad was uncertain at first, Mittens has proven to be a perfect fit for the family.

“She loves our house, and the family loves her!” Danielle said. “It’s definitely a happier environment in the house.”

Dad and Mitten have even grown close.

“It’s all because of Peyton. She had the persistence for it,” Danielle’s father told The Dodo, saying also:

“Mittens is a sweet cat.”

Messy is a yellow Labrador with a passion for friendship. 

Messy lives with his mother, Oranit Kittragul, in Thailand. While she benefits from the love of her dog, Messy’s caring and affectionate ways go much further. Another dog ends up having a better life – all thanks to Messy!

Across the street from Messy and Oranit’s home is Audi, a lovable Husky. Audi’s owner has work during the day, and leaves him alone in the yard. Like many dogs, Audi gets anxious when left alone. 

Thanks to Messy, this anxiety can be relieved through the company of a friend. 

“When he feels lonely and cries, I always ask my dog to see and talk to him,” Oranit told The Dodo. “My dog just looks from my fence and sometime he barks to [Audi]. I don’t know what they are communicating, but he stops crying.”

Messy brings comfort to Audi, and Audi wanted to show his appreciation. When Audi’s owner forgot to close the gate to his yard on his way to work, Audi made a move! Audi escaped her yard and headed to Oranit’s fence. Messy was right at the gate to greet Audi.

“He ran to my dog and they hugged each other,” Oranit said, taking a photo of the moment.

The dogs hugged, and Audi had to go home soon after. Despite the space between Audi and Messy, their friendship could never be stronger. 

Now that Oranit realized the love and friendship shared between dogs, she organized play dates for the two. Now they can get together and enjoy their friendship.

Chewy had a handwritten note attached to him explaining something heartbreaking.

“Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart but she has NO other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much — please love and take care of him.”

Chewy was quickly brought to Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue. Linda Gilliam, president and founder of the rescue, learned Chewy’s story and knew she had to help.

“My heart dropped to my knees,” Gilliam told The Dodo. “I didn’t hesitate to accept him and instructed my foster to immediately get him to an ER.”

Chewy was on his way to living a healthier life!

While it is unknown where the woman that left Chewy behind ended up, Gilliam hopes the story of abuse is enough to help those in similar situations. If there is a need to escape from abuse, but no way to take a pet along, you can contact a local animal rescue group. In many cases, the rescues are able to keep pets with their original owners.

“This is a very overlooked issue as a whole,” Gilliam said. “We also wanted to try and get the message to Chewy’s mom that she did a brave thing and that he is safe and will have a great life.”

Elyse Betschart, Jaxton’s mom, brought Jaxton to the Charleston Animal Society shelter to pick out two dogs to sponsor. This means using money to help pay the adoption fees for two dogs in need!

First, Jaxton saw a black and white pit bull mix with beautiful black patches around her eyes. While her name was Penelope, her features had Jaxton calling her “Spot”. This was the first dog he chose to sponsor.

While heading to the desk to work on sponsoring Penelope, Jaxton saw another cute pit bull. This pit bull was known as Tank!

“Mommy! He’s big and chunky just like me!” Jaxton yelled out, running over to the cage door and petting Tank’s head through the bars.

While Jaxton wanted to adopt Tank, he was unable to. Instead, he chose to sponsor Tank, just like he was going to sponsor Penelope! Jaxton was helping the two dogs get adopted and find loving homes.

Jaxton was very proud and excited about sponsoring Tank, and the Charleston Animal Society captured the cute moment and posted it to their Facebook. To no surprise, the photo went viral very quickly! The post got over 6,000 reactions with around 200 comments.

The attention Jaxton brought to sponsorship had many people wondering how they could do the same for the shelter! This brought in a ton of new interested donors and new sponsors. It was amazing how quickly Jaxton’s compassionate decision ended up helping many other dogs at the shelter.

Kay Hyman, the Director of Community Engagement at the Charleston Animal Society, said that the post ended up getting to around 200,000 Facebook users. Of course the image was cute, but it also helped spread awareness about sponsorship like never before.

Many people did not know that by sponsoring a pet’s adoption, you pay for the spaying or neutering surgery, vaccines, microchip, heartworm protection, and flea prevention for a dog at the shelter! By having these costs taken care of, new owners can come to the shelter, adopt the dog, and use their money getting necessary supplies for their new furry friend. By making things more affordable, more dogs can be adopted!

The Betscharts are a military family, moving to new places every three years (with 2 kids, 4 rescue dogs, and 2 rescue cats!). Because of the breed bans associated with military housing, pit bulls are not an option for the family to rescue. In the future, however, they wish to begin their own dog rescue.

Elyse knows that pit bulls struggle to find loving homes and often end up trapped in shelters. She is thrilled to know her son has such a loving heart, and cares to spread his kindness to animals in need.

“Animals are a huge part of our lives,” Elyse explained to iHeartDogs. “Knowing that my son was the catalyst for the community coming together to give shelter dogs a voice makes me feel incredibly blessed.”

“I feel like I’ve done my job – like I can retire as a mom!” she later said with a laugh.

How deeply do dogs care for their owners?

Tony, a very loyal pup, was very upset when he thought he had seen his owner for the last time.

On May 13th, Jesus Hueche, Tony’s owner, took a rough fall. While pruning a tree in Argentina, he fell six feet onto the concrete. His head hit the ground, knocking him unconscious.

Paramedics arrived and found Hueche with Tony right by his side.

He wasn’t going to leave his owner.

The paramedics placed a neck brace on Hueche, and Tony still would not leave his owner.

He was very worried!

When Hueche finally came into consciousness, he let Tony know he was going to be okay. Poor Tony never knew if his owner would wake up at all!

When Hueche was lifted into an ambulance, Tony tried hard to climb inside with his owner. He never wanted to be separated from the person he cares about most.

Thankfully, Hueche’s injuries were not serious and he was able to be released from the hospital after a short period of time. Tony was so happy!

For good reason, Tony and Hueche’s story spread across social media. The bond between dog and owner is a two way street of pure love!

After the incident, Hueche reflected on when he adopted Tony. “One day we saw him on the street and adopted him, gave him love, food and is part of our family,” Hueche told La Brujula 24. “For me he’s like a son.”

Hueche loves Tony, and Tony loves his dad!

The rabbit was very young when he was rescued – so young that his umbilical cord was still attached. While he was very weak, and many did not expect to see him survive, the rabbit pushed through and persevered.

Less than two weeks later, the foundation found out about a pigeon’s nest desperately in need of assistance. In the nest, a chick was helpless. With the chick sat an unfortunate egg that was unable to survive. By some miracle, the chick was mostly unharmed when the nest fell.

When rescuers took in the chick, the rabbit still needed use of the incubator. In order to combat this issue, the rescuers decided to create a miniature wall to divide the two animals.

Very quickly the two rescued animals tore down their diving wall, and sought solace in each other.

 The two find comfort and companionship in each other.

At the Kildare Animal Foundation Wildlife Unit, they decided to name the rabbit Bunny and the pigeon Pidg.

Together, the two feel invincible. Together they grow and prosper.

When the two are well, they will be able to go back into their natural habitats, however, in the meantime they can be friends and cherish each other through this challenging time.
