Source: Hailee Graham//Facebook

Soon after Tate moved in with her new family, the next door neighbor also adopted a puppy, named Vernon. The tall backyard fence did nothing to stop Tate and Vernon from falling in puppy love. Hailee would often come outside and catch the two digging a tunnel to each other. “We couldn’t get them to stop. We couldn’t keep them apart. They would just keep digging holes to each other,” Hailee told The Dodo. Given the undeniable connection, the neighbors knew they had to do something. So they made a custom doggie door in the fence!

The family constructed a custom-built doggie-door in the fence, allowing Tate and Vernon to visit each other whenever they’d like. As you can imagine, since the doggie-door has been built, Tate and Vernon have been inseparable. “They love being together! I don’t know if they are actually in love, but I like to think so,” Hailee shared with The Dodo.

It might not be feasible for everyone to have a doggie-door connected with their neighbor, but Hailee hopes Tate and Vernon’s sweet story helps other dog lovers create a more welcoming environment in their yard. “I hope that it encourages people to be more friendly with their neighbors, and encourage a sense of community. It has worked out well for us so far,” Hailee told The Dodo.

Knowing that there are kind-hearted people that accommodate their dogs restores our faith in humanity. If Tate and Vernon’s guardians’ gesture of building a doggie door brings a smile to your face, share this article with the dog lovers in your life!

This family made sure their pup felt special for his 12th birthday, the age a student usually graduates from elementary school in Quebec.

Yogi, the family’s Maltese-Yorkshire terrier-Shih Tzu mix, has always had a strong bond with his sisters Pamela and Olivia Defresne.

“We adore him and, even if he is not a human, we consider him a full member of our family,” Pamela Dufresne told The Dodo. “He is our little prince, our little treasure.”

He’s such a valuable part of the family, everyone nearly forgets Yogi isn’t human.

“He’s very intelligent, and he understands a lot of words that many dogs wouldn’t,” Dufresne said. “Talking to him is like talking to a human.”

Yogi and his sisters play games together and support each other.

“When we cry, he tries to make us laugh by licking our tears,” Dufresne added. “When we have an argument, he puts himself between us.”

While Yogi has some limitations as a dog, his sisters make sure he feels like one of the humans.

“Since we were young, my sister and I love to imagine different scenarios in which our dog acts like a human: going to school, playing soccer, crossing the border illegally, playing video games, getting arrested,” Dufresne said. “In our imagination, he did all those things!”

This year, Olivia decided to give Yogi the ultimate dream come true–graduation!

“As a surprise, my sister Olivia decided to secretly make a graduation picture,” Dufresne added. “Then, while nobody was at home, she replaced an old baby picture that was hanging between me and my sister’s graduation pictures with our dog’s graduation picture.”

Crafting the perfect image took some hard work with Photoshop, but it paid off! The picture seemed so accurate, Olivia’s family didn’t realize the image on the mantel for a little while.

“When we did, we laughed for a good 10 minutes, then we cried a little out of proudness,” Dufresne said. “To this day, Yogi’s graduation picture is the main attraction of the living room.”

What’s even better? The family has decided to keep Yogi’s picture front and center in the living room.

Thankfully, the whole family is in agreement that Yogi’s picture deserves a place of honor. “It will probably stand there ‘til our death,” Dufresne added. “We love him so much!”

On March 31st, Yogi will be turning 13. Stay tuned to see what’s to come for the next big milestone–becoming a teenager!

“We were contacted about the five puppies in distress on a private property 45 minutes west of Edmonton. All five puppies [were] severely emaciated and dehydrated,” Tessa Lee told The Dodo.

Lee quickly made her way over and was granted access to the property near the Alberta Beach. She was only authorized to gather the five puppies, despite there being other animals seen on the property.

The five puppies were frozen, and very close to death in the cold. Lee drove the puppies to her home, but could not be certain they would survive.

Lee was quick on her feet, thinking carefully of all she could do to help the poor dogs.

“I assessed their hydration levels, and put them on heat packs while administering fluids subcutaneously,” Lee said. “We relied on maple syrup to boost glucose levels and slowly began administering recovery wet dog food every two hours via feeding syringes.”

Through her holiday, Lee brought the litter of puppies back to health as best she could. Fortunately, Lee’s family understood her caring for the dogs. They have come to expect spur of the moment rescues after seeing Lee and her friends help animals in need at the volunteer-run rescue.

“Our families have come to expect some special animal guests joining us for Christmas dinner, whether it is a litter of kittens, puppies or even a ‘bottle baby’ lamb,” Lee explained. “We find that this time of year many people are traveling to be with family and therefore more animals in distress are noticed and reported. Our phones are definitely never off during the Christmas season.”

As Christmas Eve came about, the bottle-feeding and warmth seemed to do justice for all of the puppies – except one. While her brothers and sisters were recovering, this little puppy was struggling to even hold herself up.

Because of her red fur, Lee called the puppy Ruby. For Ruby, the next day could be the difference between life and death.

She is holding on and beginning to perk up,” Lee posted on WHARF’s Facebook page December 24. “Keep her in your thoughts and we will update everyone on her after the holidays.”

With great luck, Christmas brought a miracle. Ruby made it through the night and was finally on her feet.

“Merry Christmas everyone!! We have movement,” Lee wrote on Facebook. “This puppy didn’t have the strength to lift her body up yesterday. She is drinking water and eating on her own now.”

Support came from all corners of the web after Lee’s post. People even offered to take Ruby in!

. “At this point, Ruby’s condition is touch and go, and she is under 24/7 monitoring with us,” Lee explained. “The other four seem to be holding fast, we will be keeping everyone updated on Ruby’s condition as time goes on.”

While helping these puppies has been no simple task, Lee is more than happy to do it.

“Special cases such as these just require a huge dedication of time and effort, whether that’s waking up every two hours to feed them or monitoring alertness throughout the night,” Lee added. “Every animal deserves to be cared for and over the last decade we have done everything in our power to provide that to every animal that comes through our rescue.”

If progress continues as it has, Ruby’s siblings should be ready for adoption by some time in February!

For those interested in adopting a pet, Lee has some careful words of advice.“We urge people that are considering bringing an animal into their families to ensure that they are able to afford to spay/neuter their animal so situations like this no longer happen.”

The Armstrong family lives in Wingham, New South Wales. Donna and Trevor’s three grandsons got matching race car beds from a furniture store in the area.

One member of the family was starting to feel left out.

“My son Zac, who doesn’t have any kids, said to us, ‘Aww, where’s my son’s car bed?” Donna told The Dodo. Zac was referring to none other than his 3-year-old Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, Butch Cassidy.

And so, the grandparents decided it was time to get the dog a race car bed of his own! However, his turned out a little different from the rest…

Created and painted by grandpa, the wooden bed is made just for Butch. His name is even painted across the side! It has four tiny wheels (with carefully painted logos!) and a comfortable area full of pillows and blankets.

“He works six days a week, but every spare moment he had leading up to the holiday he’d been working on it,” Donna said.

“He was devastated two days before Christmas because Zac took my dog downstairs and nearly busted the surprise when he was working on it in the workshop. But the look on Zac’s face the day he opened it showed he clearly hadn’t seen it.”

The bed took nearly a month to create. As expected, the granddog was a big fan of the bed!

“Butch was quite excited when he opened his bed and got straight in it,” Donna said. “He lies in it now at night while his dad watches TV, but when it’s sleep time he gets into the big bed with his dad.”

Because Butch is an only dog, he gets to hangout with his grandparents and their three dogs while his dad is working. To no surprise, this has led to a beautiful bond!

“My husband has a shop, so Butch goes to work with his pop every day,” Donna said. “He eagerly sits at the front window waiting for his dad to come by at 5 p.m. As soon as his dad picks up the keys, he will come and say bye-bye to nan and pop and gives us a cuddle.”

Butch knows just how spoiled of a grandkid he is!

“He loves his toys and loves the box of toys at his nanny’s,” Donna added. “Luckily I have taught his Aunty Neecy, our schnauzer, to clean the toys up after he’s gone as he manages to get every single one out and leaves them all around the house. He is our grandson and is treated as such.”

This would allow her to leave right after! There was just one thing she had to do first…

Ask her professor.

Lewis was uncertain how her professor would react.

Marvel’s birthday party had everything – from treats and games to family and friends. Her siblings, two other dogs, a cat, and a lizard, all joined in the fun.

While Marvel and her siblings look different, they are all best friends! Age and species can’t change the love they have for each other. Everyone was happy to celebrate her special day.

“Skye is the black lab and she is 6 years old,” Emma Bias, the crew’s mom, told The Dodo. “Neave is the yellow lab and she is 3 years old. Espurr is the cat and she is 1 year old. Sparrow is the bearded dragon and he is 4; he is the only brother in the group. They all love each other very much. The sisters love to play and cuddle together.”

At her party, Marvel got lots of presents – including treats and an awesome pizza squeaky toy.

Marvel played with her sisters in the yard, playing fetch and tug of war. The brothers watched from the sidelines.

Of course, there is no party without food! Everyone had a special treat…

And lots of it!

“I made a homemade dog-friendly cake which was made of oats, carrots and blueberries with peanut butter icing,” Bias said. “I made cheese and chicken biscuits, and I left out salad for the bearded dragon.”

Everyone loved the treats, and they certainly loved sitting at (and sometimes on) the table. What a great way to celebrate the first year of life!

After two hours, party time came to an end. Luckily for all the partygoers, the fun never has to stop – there are many occasions to celebrate in the future!
