Luna is one very enthusiastic bear. If the world held a bears-only award ceremony, she would take home gold for being the “Most Ready for Hibernation.” This year, she’s jumping headfirst into all of her bear-ly duties.

So what duties does a bear have? When it’s toasty outside, Luna makes sure to cool off by spending her time in the local ponds. And what about when that ripe chill of winter enters the air? Luna knows it’s time to get ready for hibernation.

Source: The Dodo, Four Paws International

Luna hasn’t always lived the good life. For her first three years – when she was only a cub – she lived without the comforts that a wild bear cub should have. As a youngster, she was most likely stolen from her home after poachers killed her mother. Poachers unfortunately see tiny cubs as objects from which to profit, so they rip them away from their homes and sell them to business owners.

Screenshot: Four Paws International

Poor Luna was sold to an amusement park. “Luna lived a horrible life at the amusement park in southern Albania for about three years, before we could rescue her in 2016,” Jeta Lepaja, a spokesperson for the organization that runs Luna’s new home, Bear Sanctuary Muritz.

And now, she’s making up for lost time! This rescue bear enjoys freedom and choices that she never experienced before, thanks to her friendly sanctuary that is located in Germany and supported by Four Paws International.

Now that she is no longer being scrutinized and treated as an entertainment object, Luna gets to choose how to entertain herself. That means attending to all of those animal instincts. Recently, when a chill came into the air, Luna went on hyper-drive and dug herself two dens.

Source: The Dodo, Four Paws International

And she did it in record speed. With something as important as hibernation, this young bear didn’t waste any time.

If Luna had still been at the amusement park, she wouldn’t have been able to dig these dens and follow her biological instincts. She is now taking full advantage of her freedom. Last year, Luna also dug herself a nice den and seemed to enjoy the fruits of her labor, based on her enthusiasm in prepping not one, but two dens for this year’s winter!

And it doesn’t seem like Luna is taking anything for granted – these photos show her admiring her handy work and it even looks like she’s smiling in appreciation for her new life.

Source: The Dodo, Four Paws international

And with several months ahead of just napping and enjoying some peace and quiet, why wouldn’t she be grinning?

Source: The Dodo, Four Paws International

The facility requires a lot of hands-on work. The caregivers must check on the animals frequently.

Meet Bobo

Bobo was brought into the sanctuary in 1994 as a small, 2-year-old gorilla after his mother had been killed by poachers. Many years later, he is now the huge leader of his group.

Despite his dominant status within his group, he is, surprisingly, a gentle giant.

Source: Ape Action Africa

One day, when a caregiver went to check on Bobo, a Silverback Gorilla, and his group, they noticed something astounding!

Bobo had found a small, wild bushbaby and was cradling it.

Source: Ape Action Africa

Bobo’s New Friend

“Our silverback gorilla Bobo made a surprising new friend this week — a wild bush baby!” Ape Action Africa wrote on Facebook. “Caregivers discovered him cradling the tiny primate during their morning checks, and were amazed to see him handling it with the utmost care – proving that gorillas really are the gentle giants of the forest.”

Elissa O’Sullivan, a spokesperson for Ape Action Africa, explained that the bushbaby had likely already been living in Bobo’s enclosure. “The bush baby showed no fear of Bobo — moving around his body and spending time hopping around in an open grassy area, before choosing to return to Bobo,” she told The Dodo.

Source: Ape Action Africa

Just like a group of little kids, soon enough, the other gorillas were curious about Bobo’s new friend. Bobo was nice enough to let his friends look at the bushbaby, but he did not let them hold it.

Source: Ape Action Africa

The sanctuary’s Facebook post went on to say, “Bobo’s group-mates were desperately curious, particularly his favorite female Avishag, but he kept them all at a distance, making sure that no one disturbed his new friend. Bushbabies are usually nocturnal so it is very rare to see one, and even rarer to witness this kind of interaction. The little bushbaby was happy to play in Bobo’s arms, hopping off to explore the grass nearby, before returning to Bobo’s hand.”

After 2 hours, Bobo knew to return the bushbaby to its home. “When the game was over, Bobo walked purposefully off on two legs to deliver his friend safely back into the trees.”

Source: Ape Action Africa

Unfortunately, this was extremely devastating for the young pup. But thankfully, the man called for help later that night.

“[This seal] did come in with some injuries and he did have some metabolic imbalances because of probably being away from mom for so long and being in the hotel room where he couldn’t get the nourishment he needed. So he is lucky that he pulled through,” Dr. Nicki Rosenhagen, a PAWS veterinarian who worked to rehabilitate the seal, explained to Kiro7.

Source: Kiro7

“We’re really excited. It was a little touch-and-go in the beginning—he had some wounds over his back and those metabolic imbalances that were concerning. But after a couple of weeks in case he hit his stride and took off and has been putting on weight and eating really well so, yeah, we’re excited,” Rosenhagen continued.

The Unfortunate Truth

Sadly, this happy ending is not the case for many other seals that are disturbed by humans.

“This is pretty common; we see it all the time. Every year, we get these orphaned animals in that have had some sort of human disturbance,” explained Jeff Brown, a wildlife naturalist at PAWS in Lynnwood, WA.

In one instance, a young pup had to euthanized after a human put it in a shopping bag to carry it off the beach.

Source: Kiro7

Often times, humans feel they need to intervene because a seal pup looks alone on the beach.

In Edmonds, WA people crowded around a young pup until Seal Sitters, a volunteer organization, arrived to shoo them away. Seal Sitters then tagged the pup and put barriers around it to keep the humans away.

“When a seal is hauled out, or comes out of the water, it may look orphaned but it can be there for up to 24 hours without seeing mom so that’s when we have those issues, when people think it’s been orphaned but it’s not,” Brown explained to Kiro7.

Source: Kiro7

What To Do

If you see a seal alone on the beach, your best bet is to leave it alone. Often times, when a seal pup is touched by a human, the mother will no longer care for it. This can prove very detrimental for the young baby.

If you see a seal that looks hurt or in distress, call NOAA at (866) 767-6114.

Please share to educate your family & friends about proper protocol with these beautiful creatures!

Andy Corbe, his wife, and two daughters lived on their sailboat for almost a year in 2014. Andy and his wife wanted his children to appreciate nature and the world around them.

“We’d been running the rat race hard and felt we just wanted to show our kids what life should really be about: exploring our amazing planet. We live on board for most the year, just taking hurricane season off,” Andy shared with the Dodo.

Source: Andy Corbe

The family visited Belize and stumbled upon a tiny island called Moho Caye. The island is only about 8 acres and has a caretaker that lives there full time. The beach appeared pristine… until the family walked to the other side of the island.

Source: Andy Corbe

So much trash had accumulated that the island looked like a landfill. On another nearby island, South Water Caye, Andy and his family met a hermit crab in an unnatural home: the hermit crab was in a bright red plastic bottle cap.

“He just came scuttling across our path,” Andy said.

Source: Andy Corbe

The family couldn’t just walk away from a hermit crab who clearly needed help. “We took him back to the boat and presented him with our shell collection to find a more suitable home before returning him back to the beach,” Andy said.

Source: Andy Corbe

It may have been a small act, but the family changed this little creatures life forever.

“It was a symbolic gesture. There’s that beautiful saying, ‘Saving one animal won’t save the world but it will change the world for that one animal.’ And that is something we have taught our kids,” Andy shared.

Source: Andy Corbe

The families discovery also came with some hard truths about our plastic pollution. “Many marine animals and especially sea birds are literally starving to death because their stomachs are full of plastic,” Andy said.

Andy hopes that by sharing the story of the hermit crab found in a red plastic bottle cap, people will start to rethink their use of single use plastics. “If every person took some responsibility for the wrongs they see on the planet and take action to make them right then we would be far better off,” Andy said.

Cutting back on single-use plastics can be as simple as investing in a reusable grocery bag or bringing a stainless steel or glass straw with you when dining out. Little acts add up to make a huge difference for the health of our planet and its inhabitants!

Source: James Prettyman

James glanced beyond his coffee table to the source of the noise. Sure enough, his ears did not deceive him; there stood a family of ducks.

James got up and began to record his attempt to corral the ducks out of his home through the front door in which they came in.

Making Their Way Home

The ducks were not having it. In James’ video, you can see that the mother duck begins to turn the wrong way. James responds with a “No, no,” and the mother duck obliges. She turns the other way, waddling down the hallway, through the kitchen, and into the dining room. Meanwhile, her seven baby ducklings eagerly follow her, quacking the whole time.

Source: James Prettyman

From the dining room, the ducks spot the open sliding glass door, so they decide to head to the sunny backyard. They hop down into the grass and make their way to the edge of James’ property where you can see the lake in the distance. When they reach the fence, the duckling easily pop through a hole, but mama duck has a hard time finding a way through. In the video, you can hear her moment of panic while trying to figure out how to get through the fence to her babies.

Source: James Prettyman

James opens the fence for her and says, “Here you go, buddy. Here you go.” The mom duck slowly approaches the now open fence and makes her way through. Once on the other side, her babies speedily reunite with her. And off the family goes!

It’s pretty impressive that James was able to catch this spectacle in action. Be sure to pass along!

Amboseli National Park in Kenya is home to almost 1,600 elephants, roaming freely throughout the park.

Recently, 38-year-old Paru gave birth to not one but two beautiful calves. Elephant twins!

Source: Facebook/Amboseli Trust for Elephants

Beating the Odds

The park hadn’t seen such a rare occurrence since 1980. Furthermore, research suggests that there is a less than a 1% chance that female elephants will give birth to twins. If they do, it is extremely likely that one of the babies will pass away shortly after birth.

Thankfully, despite these statistics, the calves are doing remarkably well. Paru and her 40 member family have all stepped in to help care for these miracles.

We think that the two were dealt a pretty good hand; they get to grow up in the wild but safe from poachers and under the protection of the park rangers.

“This is a very unique scenario in terms of conservation, particularly in the elephant population,” Kenneth Ole Nashu, a senior park warden, told On Demand News. “We are really proud, and we are now monitoring [to ensure] that the babies are in quite good health.”

If you’d like to help the wild elephants in Amboseli National Park, be sure to donate!

Dolph C. Volker has always loved animals. Armed with a Zoology degree, Dolph spends his free time as an advocate and volunteer for The Cheetah Experience in South Africa.

The Cheetah Experience

The Cheetah Experience is primarily an ethical breeding center for cheetahs, but the nonprofit organization doesn’t stop with cheetahs. The Cheetah Experience also aims to spread awareness about all endangered and threatened species in South Africa. The organization serves as a sanctuary for local animals by rescuing any animals in need.

Source: Dolph C. Volker

Although Dolph works fulltime in the United States, he saves up money and time to ensure he can visit this wonderful sanctuary.

When Dolph first began volunteering for The Cheetah Experience, he was a little wary of being so close to the cheetahs.

Dolph’s Paradise: The Garden of Eden

Soon enough, Dolph developed a special bond with a particular cheetah, Eden.

One day, three-year-old Eden, approached Dolph while he was napping under a tree. After checking him out, Eden chose to snuggle up to Dolph.

A long cuddle underneath a shady tree has now become a regular activity for Dolph and Eden.

Source: Dolph C. Volker

Dolph told The Animal Channel, “True to Eden’s nature, she warmed up to me in days and ended up really liking me, so much so that I was able to trust her completely. The more she felt comfortable with me, the more she treated me just like another Cheetah which included the grooming, nibbling, biting, pacifying, purring, laying on me, and sleeping… cuddling up close to me. I’m amazed at how much more interactive and affectionate Cheetahs are compared to the average domesticated cat.”

The Cheetah Whisperer is Born

Dolph’s YouTube channel is chock-full of videos with Eden and other cheetahs at the sanctuary.

During his many cheetah cuddle sessions, you can hear the intense purring of the happy cats. They love to lick, nibble, and even bite at him. Dolph admits that these cuddle sessions can actually be quite painful. Cheetah tongues are extremely coarse and at any moment they stop purring, they could bite at you. Despite this, he indulges his sweet cheetah companions.

Source: Dolph C. Volker

Dolph has even adopted his own five-year-old cheetah, Gabriel and has hopes to open up his own nonprofit breeding center for cheetahs.

Dolph tells The Animal Channel, “[Gabriel] is the first member of my cheetah family to become a part of my breeding project. He is my foundation animal. I’ve known Gabriel since he was eight months old and we hit it off from week one. He will be five years old Aug of 2018. I have special plans for Gabriel and those that follow him to live a life close to freedom as possible and show them what it is like to be a cheetah.”

Seeing is believing; you will have to take a look at Dolph’s YouTube channel to truly understand how precious these moments are. Be sure to also check out The Cheetah Whisperer Facebook and share!

Misha and Dasha spent their days pacing around their tiny cage. For entertainment or perhaps in search of a way out, the two often climbed up the metal cage. They were not given tools for amusement and relied heavily on the scraps of restaurant guests for food.

Source: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/(IAR)

To make matters worse, as their cage was situated along a riverbank, it was often submerged in river water. At one point in time, the river flooded, and the bears were at risk of drowning.

Source: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/(IAR)

Their Rescue

For years, International Animal Rescue (IAR) tried to save these two bears.

Finally, in November 2017, IAR and the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) were able to convince the restaurant owners to release the bears to their care.

On the day of their rescue, the two bears were sedated and the metal bars of their cage were cut. They were transported to their new, mountainside sanctuary where they were given all the fruits, veggies, nuts and honey to help them gain weight before the winter.

Source: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/(IAR)

As expected, winter came, and Misha and Dasha went into hibernation.

In an interview with The Dodo, Lis Key, PR and communications manager for IAR, stated “IAR and FPWC will work to make it [their sanctuary] everything they deserve after so many years of misery. They will be treated with compassion and respect and given the environment and the freedom to behave like bears, not as objects for people to gawp at.”

Source: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/(IAR)

A New Beginning

In Spring 2018, the two bears emerged from their hibernation with two new members of their family! Dasha had given birth to two healthy young cubs. No one had known that Dasha was pregnant when she was freed from her captivity many months back.

“Now, seeing her with her two little cubs is simply beautiful. It is so moving to reflect on her miserable life behind bars and then look at her now — a natural mother caring for her cubs, protecting them fiercely from the outside world,” Vicky Mkrtchyan, environmental projects coordinator for FPWC, told The Dodo.

Source: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/(IAR)

The Sad Truth

Despite Misha and Dasha’s happy ending, the truth is, many bears still suffer in Armenia. It’s estimated that about 80 bears are being kept in comparable conditions as “tourist attractions” at restaurants, bus stations, and factories throughout the country.

“I have seen for myself the conditions these bears are living in and they are nothing short of appalling,” Alan Knight, chief executive for IAR, said in a statement to The Dodo. “Some have been living for years in cramped, barren cages, surviving only on scraps and filthy, stagnant water. Many of them relieve their boredom and frustration by pacing endlessly to and fro, banging their heads against the walls or climbing up the bars, searching frantically for an escape route. These beautiful creatures have been robbed of their dignity and their freedom. It is absolutely sickening.”

Thankfully, IAR has plans to free many more bears in Armenia as a part of their project The Great Bear Rescue. To support this operation, please make a donation to IAR and be sure to share with family & friends.

A family taking a guided boat tour along the Chobe River in Botswana stumbled upon an elephant wading in the river. In a terrifying moment, the elephant charges the boat, leaving the tourists stunned.

Su-an Müller-Marais and her family were visiting Botswana in celebration of her mother-in-law’s 60th birthday. The family decided to take a guided boat tour along the Chobe River, when they came across a magnificent sight: a wild elephant in the river, peacefully grazing on grass.

Source: Kruger Sightings/YouTube

The tour guide shut off the boat as to not disturb the gentle giant. Not wanting to let the moment go by unpreserved, Su-an Müller-Marais took out her phone and begun recording the elephant in the water. “We could hear the elephant plucking, chewing and breathing. We were cautious but in awe of this magnificent animal in front of us,” she told Latest Sightings.

But then, the elephant turned and looked directly at them… and started charging at the boat. Elephants may weight several tons, but they are natural swimmers, much to the families surprise. “Although we were extremely close to the elephant, he seemed to be grazing quite peacefully in the fully flooded waters. What could go wrong?” Su-an Müller-Marais shared with Latest Sightings.

The elephant was not pleased with the tourists in his home and he shoved the boat a few times in the direction from where it came. His message was loud and clear: you are too close.

Thankfully, everyone on the boat was free from harm and were only left in shock and awe about what just happened. Su-an Müller-Marais said that the trip left her family with a “renewed respect for animals.”

Elephants are emotional, social, and intelligent beings who deserve to live in peace. If you are considering going on an African safari, please be sure to do your research and ensure that the safari is accredited! Seeing animals up close and personal can be a wonderful experience… as long as the animals aren’t being exploited.
